Avaya stares down Microsoft, Cisco
While Avaya's contact center and unified communications announcements last week signal the company wants a dominant position in those areas, it faces internal challenges and formidable competitors including Microsoft and Cisco.
The company is in the midst of digesting and integrating Nortel's enterprise division, which it bought last year for $900 million and from which it expects to reap big returns by next spring. At the same time, it is dealing with the same generally soft economy that other vendors are -- though Cisco is registering surprisingly strong revenue gains.

Avaya's CEO says the next six to nine months are critical as it tries to integrate the former Nortel Enterprise division -- including network infrastructure and business telephony -- into its fold. The purchase was finalized last December, so the company has just completed its second full quarter since the acquisition. "On most operational details we have the normal first quarter challenges from shipments and logistics. Second quarter things are feeling pretty good, and the litmus test is ahead of us," CEO Kevin Kennedy told Network World in an interview at Avaya's offices.
That test is whether the company can nail down significant long-term commitments from Nortel telephony and contact center customers and lock them into a migration toward Avaya UC. At the heart of that challenge is convincing Nortel customers to buy Avaya Aura, the company's flagship communications server. With Aura customers can step into IP telephony, glue together disparate VoIP systems and -- most significantly for Avaya -- lay the foundation for adopting UC.
Kennedy says Aura can support Session Initiation Protocol trunking immediately to bring cost savings to corporations and over time bring increased productivity that will save money long-term but might have a longer return on investment.
He acknowledges that getting Nortel communications customers interested in sticking with Avaya as they make plans for transitions to UC is key. The company is trying to draw them in with a flurry of announcements about new products, product enhancements and integrations with Nortel products. "This period right now is about bringing a lot of innovation to market. Now the question will be, are our customers as excited about it as we are?" he asks.
The stakes are high since just 17% of Avaya accounts overlap with Nortel's, and competitors are gunning for the rest with attractive deals. "These customers are a pretty loyal base," says Zeus Kerravala, an analyst with Yankee Group. "But they're loyal to Nortel, not Avaya." Historically, until Cisco entered the VoIP market, very few telephony customers shifted from one vendor to another, Kerravala says, and the recent turmoil of Nortel's bankruptcy and Avaya's purchase of its telephony business puts Nortel customers in play.
Surprisingly, the purchase of Nortel by Avaya didn't result in Avaya catapulting to the top of the IP telephony market as some analysts expected. With Nortel and Avaya ranking solidly among the top five for years with very nearly equal shares of the market led people to think combining the two would result in a formidable lead for Avaya, says Matthius Machowinski, an analyst with Infonetics. "We expected them to be ahead of everyone else," he says.

Game On: So did Microsoft really kill cross-platform play between Windows and the Xbox 360, or was it more a developer-initiated death spiral?
Kevin Unangst: It's complete fiction--it never died. The LIVE service has and continues to support cross-platform play between Windows and Xbox 360, and remains the only place where this feature is offered. Ultimately the decision to implement resides with the developers, and we expect to see more in the future.
GO: Did Microsoft run internal studies pitting gamepad players against keyboards/mice opponents?
KU: Absolutely. When we developed Shadowrun, cross-platform play was a brand new technology and we tested it at length to find the right balance for each platform. These tests played a strong role in the development of Shadowrun and included testers who were hardcore Counter-Strike players on PC and Halo players on console. The attention and detail that went in to play balancing between mouse/keyboard and controller was also something that informed a white paper on the subject, which we make available to developers as part of our development tools.
GO: Are Rahul Sood's (of Voodoo PC) comments accurate when he claims the best keyboard/mice players "demolished" the best gamepad players during Microsoft-led play tests?
KU: I can't speak to where Sood got his information, but having seen our tests it's not an accurate generalization. Game design choices can balance or tip the scales--much in the same way that a PC game can be built to use a gamepad or keyboard and mouse, and can implement either or both well or poorly. It's the developer's job to find the right balance.
GO: Can you walk us through the timeline, from the point at which Shadowrun seemed to promise a viable cross-platform future, to today, where cross-platform play seems nonexistent?
KU: In addition to Shadowrun, we also saw cross-platform titles from our partners at Sega and Capcom in Universe at War: Earth Assault and Lost Planet: Extreme Condition Colonies Edition, respectively. These showcase how cross-platform play can be successful in multiple genres, from first-person shooter to real-time strategy.

IE 9 beta release date draws near
Circle Sept. 15 on your calendars for the beta launch of Windows Internet Explorer 9, as Microsoft executives hop on a quick flight from Redmond down to San Francisco for a kickoff event.
Microsoft’s chief operating officer, Kevin Turner, revealed a September launch at the company’s annual Financial Analyst Meeting July 29, but now we have a specific date.
Invitations went out today for the event, according to a blog post by James Pratt, an IE product manager at Microsoft MCTS Training. Pratt explained that the marketing message around IE 9 is that it delivers “the Beauty of the Web” to your computer.
More than 2.5 million preview versions of IE 9 have been downloaded -- four preview versions total -- since the first preview was released at Microsoft’s MIX10 developer event in Las Vegas back in March. Microsoft has been absorbing feedback from developers using the preview versions to help tweak the product.
Microsoft is boasting that IE 9 is going to be orders of magnitude faster than IE 8. When the fourth preview was released Aug. 4, PC World’s Tony Bradley reported that according to the Acid3 score, a measure of how quickly a browser loads Web pages, the fourth preview hit a 95, versus the IE 8 score of 20. At the core of IE 9 is a new JavaScript engine, codenamed Chakra, that runs natively in the browser “rather than bolting it onto the side to support multiple JavaScript engines as some other browsers do today,” Microsoft explained in a post on the IEBlog Aug. 4. IE 9 is built to support the HTML5 standard for delivering content on the Web.
IE 9 is coming to market just as Microsoft MCITP Certification is regaining its market share against competitors like Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Apple Safari and Opera. Internet Explorer held a 60.74 percent share of the market in July, according to NetApplications, after falling below the 60 percent mark in April and May. However, as Network World’s Paul McNamara reports, IE’s market share was as high as 68 percent a year ago and Google Chrome, while at just 7.61 percent, still tripled its market share from 2.59 percent over the same period.
And IE’s competitors aren’t just sitting around moping about how IE is the king of the hill. The Mozilla Foundation released a beta of Firefox 4.0 in July and Google today launched a beta version of Chrome 6.

Circle Sept. 15 on your calendars for the beta launch of Windows Internet Explorer 9, as Microsoft executives hop on a quick flight from Redmond down to San Francisco for a kickoff event.
Microsoft’s chief operating officer, Kevin Turner, revealed a September launch at the company’s annual Financial Analyst Meeting July 29, but now we have a specific date.
Invitations went out today for the event, according to a blog post by James Pratt, an IE product manager at Microsoft MCTS Training. Pratt explained that the marketing message around IE 9 is that it delivers “the Beauty of the Web” to your computer.
More than 2.5 million preview versions of IE 9 have been downloaded -- four preview versions total -- since the first preview was released at Microsoft’s MIX10 developer event in Las Vegas back in March. Microsoft has been absorbing feedback from developers using the preview versions to help tweak the product.
Microsoft is boasting that IE 9 is going to be orders of magnitude faster than IE 8. When the fourth preview was released Aug. 4, PC World’s Tony Bradley reported that according to the Acid3 score, a measure of how quickly a browser loads Web pages, the fourth preview hit a 95, versus the IE 8 score of 20. At the core of IE 9 is a new JavaScript engine, codenamed Chakra, that runs natively in the browser “rather than bolting it onto the side to support multiple JavaScript engines as some other browsers do today,” Microsoft explained in a post on the IEBlog Aug. 4. IE 9 is built to support the HTML5 standard for delivering content on the Web.
IE 9 is coming to market just as Microsoft MCITP Certification is regaining its market share against competitors like Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Apple Safari and Opera. Internet Explorer held a 60.74 percent share of the market in July, according to NetApplications, after falling below the 60 percent mark in April and May. However, as Network World’s Paul McNamara reports, IE’s market share was as high as 68 percent a year ago and Google Chrome, while at just 7.61 percent, still tripled its market share from 2.59 percent over the same period.
And IE’s competitors aren’t just sitting around moping about how IE is the king of the hill. The Mozilla Foundation released a beta of Firefox 4.0 in July and Google today launched a beta version of Chrome 6.

Microsoft: Vista paved the way for secure Windows
Despite being widely derided (even by Microsoft executives), the Vista OS was instrumental in finally bringing to the world a secure version of Windows, at least if a presentation by a Microsoft security expert at the Usenix Security Symposium, being held this week in Washington, D.C, is any indication.
And it was the most widely hated feature of Vista -- User Access Control (UAC) -- that can take the credit.

It was all the users complaining about the annoying UAC pop-up boxes that finally spurred many application developers to rewrite their programs, explained Crispin Cowan, a Microsoft senior program manager for the Windows core security team.
These programs were rewritten so that they did not require full administrative privileges to run, which, in turn, cut down on the UAC boxes and allowed users to slowly grow more comfortable running in more limited, but safer, user modes.
"The purpose of UAC was to move applications away from using administrative privileges. Its job was to spank programs that used administrator that don't need to," Cowan said.
UAC, in effect, caused a "massive decimation of the population of ill-behaved [Windows] programs," he said. "The number of programs asking for admin rights dropped precipitously."
Cowan's talk was an extended argument on why Windows 7 is as secure as Unix variants such as Linux. And this security parity came about, in his view, in large part thanks to the fact that Windows Vista was the first desktop version of Windows to not, by default, give each user account full administrative privileges.
Windows' reputation for lousy security has been fully deserved, Cowan admitted. Even today, the most widely used version of Windows is Windows XP, which was built in 2001, and lacks most of the security provisions needed for today's environments (though Service Pack 2 added a lot of security features, he said).
Early versions of the Windows OS stressed usability over security, as well as interoperability among different programs, Cowan said. As a result, Windows allowed every user to have full control over the machine, in effect giving each user account full administrative control over a machine.
"If you are running as administrator, security is fairly hopeless," he said. Unfettered administrative rights is what allowed malware and viruses to take control of computers.
Beginning in 2002, however, Microsoft started making security an essential part of software development. As a result, the then next version of Windows, Vista, featured a total separation between what a user can do on a machine and what an administrator can do, a separation that has always been enforced on Unix distributions.
This separation, enforced by UAC, limits the damage that a user can do to a machine.
UAC could be seen as the Windows equivalent to the Unix sudo command, Cowan explained. Sudo allows a user to execute privilege tasks only after supplying an administrator, or root, password. Some Linux distributions, such as Ubuntu, do away, at least out of the box, with root accounts altogether, relying entirely on sudo.
Many users chafed at using UAC, however. Every time a program would require full administrative rights to run, a UAC box would pop up on the screen, asking the user for permission.

The annoyance of UAC actually proved to be beneficial over the long run, Cowan explained, because it reduced the number of applications that required administrative rights.
In many cases, programs did not need administrative permissions at all. Many Windows programs were designed to write their configuration data to the system registry, when it could as just as easily be stored in user folders.
Over time, application developers got the message from all the user complaints. Using anonymous telemetry data, Microsoft MCTS Training estimated that the number of Windows applications that required user access dropped from approximately 900,000 to 180,000.
While Vista got the bad reputation for user-hostility, Windows 7 made UAC more user friendly without relaxing the strict divide between user and administrator. This OS offered auto-elevation, in which a limited number of Microsoft pre-approved programs could get administrative access without the annoying user prompts. It offers a sliding UAC scale, so users can pick the level of restriction for their applications. Windows 7 also established virtual accounts so individual applications could get their own user accounts, Cowan said.
After the talk, one audience member said he agreed that UAC probably did encourage application vendors to rewrite their programs, but wondered if that was really Microsoft's goal in the first place, given the amount of user dissatisfaction it caused. Cowan himself admitted, when discussing browser security, that "Prompts are not purely evil. Prompts in which the answer is almost always 'yes' are evil."
UAC was one of a number of features that, Cowan said, brought Windows to security parity with Unix. The other features include a built-in firewall and the signing of 64-bit kernel drivers. In some cases, he argued, Windows now has security features that aren't even found in most Unix distributions, such as network access protection, memory address randomization, and data execution prevention.
"Unix had a very large security lead. Since then, Microsoft MCITP Certification has closed the gap on every front and in some cases exceeded Unix security," Cowan said.
