The rumor-mill is once again a-churning over the possibility of a larger-sized iPhone that could compete against its beefier Android cousins. If the picture holds true, then the iPhone 5 would retain the same external look and feel as its predecessors—at least, in terms of how its user-facing panel is constructed. “I think for marketing reasons Apple would not drop down to 285 ppi after making the big stink about 326 ppi,” Soneira says. “If they stayed with 326, they’d have to increase the [horizontal] resolution to 1,097 as opposed to 960 to preserve that same pixels per inch, but a lot of apps would not be happy with that.”

But the question begs: How long would Apple be content with a 3.5-inch device when its chief competitor, Android, lives on mobile devices far larger? Jobs might not think size is everything in the mobile market, but what about consumers?

How To get Offline Maps on Android

Step 1. Go to Android Market and Install RMaps.

Step2. Install/Unzip Mobile Atlas Creator and keep the dll file in the same directory

Step 3. Open the Mobile Atlas creator and Choose map source as “Google Maps”, and use following controls to select a desired areas:

* Right click to Drag
* Scroll to zoom In/Out
* Left click to select downloadable area

Step 4. Once the area is selected, you need to specify the zoom level. I personally prefer Zoom level of 18 since its detailed enough and not as detailed as Zoom level 19.

Note: zoom level 18 is the highest available for most non-US cities.

Step 5. Once you are satisfied, go ahead and select “add selection” with a name mentioned. Then select “BigPlanet SQLite” from “Atlas Settings”.

Note: If you plan to use another Application for Android Offline maps, say Maverick, AndNav, the default settings would be “Maverick atlas format” and “AndNav atlas format” respectively and maps source can be any.

Step 6. Go ahead and click “Create atlas” and the downloading would start. The duration of download is directly proportional to the area you selected in step 3.

Step 7. Once done, open the download folder mount SD card and copy the “BigPlanet_maps.sqlitedb” to /sdcard/rmaps/maps and disconnect USB.

Step 8. Open RMaps and Menu > More > Settings > User defined maps > BigPlanet_maps.sqlitedb > Enabled Maps. return to main maps screen and then Menu > Maps > BigPlanet_maps.sqlitedb.

The downloaded maps will now become active.

Now on, you can navigate around the downloaded area with GPS alone, without a need for data connection :D

Note: However, for directions, it will fetch data from Google, but the data usage is trivial.

A value of -1 forces Firefox to dynamically determine the cache size depending on the available system RAM.

Enormous!!! On my Laptop running running Chrome in Ubuntu, the memory read speed jumped from 1.2 MB/s to 95MB/s (90x times approx) which is huge. (This hard disk gives 30MB/s for large file copies). And on my mac running Snow Leopard on SSD drive, it jumped by around 10x times.

So if you are on a broadband that has speeds around than 8mbps (or higher), you should start seeing improvements immediately after applying this tweak. However, the tweak still works for slower connections, especially if your HDD isn’t that new or badly fragmented.

Microsoft Pulls a Fast One on Google

I'm sure you've all heard by now that Google is accusing Microsoft of using Google results to improve the results you get on Bing. I think this is genius.

Using the logic behind this sort of strategy, I should develop a search engine that's free of actual web crawlers and servers and any sort of infrastructure. It will just have ads to make money.

No wait, that's already out there. They're called Dogpile and Beaucoup and half a dozen also-ran engines that some people like to use. At least, those engines credit Google, whereas Microsoft does not.

This, of course, brings the nasty little habit that Microsoft has of lifting other people's ideas and good works and "embracing" them back to the forefront.

Hey, all they are doing is embracing the Google results so you, the customer, can benefit.

Microsoft, of course, says this assertion is bogus. It may well be, since we always suspect the worst when it comes to Microsoft and its business practices. Microsoft doesn't have the server farms, the bots, or the inclination to load up the company with search wonks, working on search algorithms all day and night.

By the way, has anyone wondered exactly where Yahoo fits into this picture? It did a deal with Microsoft to use Bing. Has Yahoo been out scammed? If true I'd love to hear the shouting match between Ballmer and Carol Bartz.

If I was Microsoft, I'd argue that it was merely monitoring Google results to compare them to the Bing results as a service to the user. The bad planted information was some sort of horrible mistake, and the company don't know exactly what happened. You know, like the early explanations about how various hidden Digital Research copyright notices somehow ended up in DOS 1.0 back in the day.

"These things happen, your honor."

Ethics aside, where's this headed? And how important is it? To me, if this is happening—I believe it is—then Microsoft should just admit defeat and shutter Bing or license the Google engine and be done with it. "Bing! Powered by Google" works for me. At least, it would be honest.

In the meantime, Microsoft should be ashamed of itself. Let's hope the company doesn't blame some rogue employee who meant well. Nobody is going to buy into that.

Microsoft Phone 7 Is Dead in the Water

So, according to many reports, Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 is beginning to lag in sales already, and it's doubtful the company will sustain the thing if it continues to fall behind the leaders.

I haven't even seen one of these phones, but people who have seen one tell me that it's actually a very nice device. The problem it seems to have is that it's the odd man out in a two man race. It's number three, or maybe four, or maybe five.

To fix this, Microsoft should bite the bullet and embrace Linux and should even take the Android OS, which is Open Source, and simply use it with various modifications.

Microsoft, like many other big commercial software companies, is scared to death of Open Source just because of the possibility that one of the many Open Source licenses will thrust everything the company does into the open source stew pot. They think that suddenly, because of some error in distribution or usage, Word, for example, could become Open Source. Microsoft is scared to death this will happen.

At least, that's what I assume because there is no other rationale for the refusal to use Open Source to benefit the company. After all, Microsoft is notorious for lifting ideas and designs from other vendors and putting them in its products. The company loses lawsuits over this practice. But here we have a huge cache of wide open products and source code and Microsoft stays away like a bear confronted by a skunk.

You'd think Microsoft would have completely raided and exploited the Open Source scene by now, but no.

I'm actually shocked that more MSFT shareholders haven't made a fuss about this. Why spend all that R&D and marketing money to develop and sell Phone 7 when people are buying Androids phones at an alarming rate.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer made this observation: "A month ago, Microsoft said 1.5 million Windows Phones had shipped in the first six weeks—from the Oct. 21 Europe-Asia launch until around Dec. 2. That means from then until the end of December, just about 500,000 more Windows Phones were shipped."

And as Preston Gralla from Computerworld points out, this is shipped to stores, not people. Compare this to the 300,000 Android phones activated daily!

The fact is Microsoft is zigging when it should be zagging. It needs to open a new division that has nothing to do with the rest of the company, so Open Source code can't come into contact with its commercial code. Here it can evolve an Open Source and Linux policy with products for sale and support services. The company needs to get back to an even footing with Google in the phone and, soon, the pad business. It may not catch up with Apple insofar as innovation is concerned, but it can't afford to languish and constantly be humiliated by seemingly pointless and dead-end rollouts.

It will be a huge embarrassment for the company to pull the plug on Windows Phone 7, but that's the direction this is headed. I'm sure there have been a lot of meetings about this with a lot of shouting and bogus excuses for yet another failure. Plus, all of this is right on the heels of a ridiculous flop called the Microsoft Kin phone.

Microsoft should swallow its pride and look at Linux and Android. That decision can't be any more humiliating that what it has already been doing. In fact, it may be seen as a stroke of genius.

I tried it out and found that it was quite easy -- I was able to control a remote PC as if I were sitting at its keyboard. Windows Live Mail

When Microsoft decided to kill the Windows Mail desktop client back in 2007, not everyone was pleased. Windows Mail had been an update to Outlook Express, was built into Windows Vista and was a nice piece of work, although not as powerful as full-blown Outlook. Microsoft subsequently made it available as a free download under the name Windows Live Mail.

This latest version of Windows Live Mail represents a significant improvement over the previous version. The big change here is the addition of the Ribbon interface, found in Office 2007 and 2010 applications, and a calendar pane (which gives you access to the calendar that is in Windows Live Mail). This makes Windows Live Mail much more Outlook-like. In fact, at a first, quick glance, you could almost mistake it for Outlook.

Also useful is the new Conversation View, similar to the one introduced in Outlook 2010, which makes it easy to follow threaded conversations with one or more people. Every e-mail with more than one message has a small triangle next to it. Click the triangle to see a chronological list of every message in the conversation; click any message to jump to it. It's a fine time-saver.

Windows Live Mail also lifts several features from Hotmail. As with Hotmail, if you want to share photos with others via e-mail, you can send a photo album.

Create your e-mail, click the "Photo album" icon, and choose your photos. Windows Live Mail then formats your images into a nice-looking album (using thumbnails) in your e-mail, and also stores the photos on your Windows Live SkyDrive account. Recipients can click the thumbnails and be sent to the full-size images on SkyDrive. This solves the problem of ISPs blocking messages with too-large attachments.

Also welcome are Quick Views, which appear on the left-hand side of the Live Mail screen, and which are especially useful for people who use Windows Live Mail for multiple e-mail accounts. For example, if you want to see all of your unread mail from all accounts combined, click "Unread e-mail." To see unread mail just from your contacts, click "Unread from contacts." And to see all the RSS feeds you haven't read yet, click "Unread feeds."

The sleeper of the group that has gotten very little notice is Windows Live Sync. That's a shame, because for people with multiple PCs, this little app may be the best of the bunch. Beyond that, it could provide an important syncing foundation for many other Microsoft products in the future, including the Web version of Office.

Windows Live Sync does exactly what the name implies -- it synchronizes files and folders among multiple PCs, Macs as well as Windows PCs. (Note: While previous versions of Windows Live Sync do work with Macs, I was unable to get the Mac version of this beta to work.)

The application finds other computers that have Windows Live Sync installed; you can then choose the folders that you want to synchronize, and on which computers you want them synchronized. 1. Look out for #1. Take responsibility for your own career development. Many large organizations have scaled back on training and development-a common outcome of the economic downturn-and small companies can rarely provide significant support. Simply put, your career rests in one set of hands: yours.

9. Find a guide. Mentors can serve as influential role models and provide important guidance for your career. Reach out to a potential mentor within your company or industry and see if he or she would be open to mentoring you for a specific purpose and timeframe.

Create a new partition with Windows 7 tool

Here are the steps to make that happen.

Disk Management
As in the previous post, the first step is to start the Windows 7 Disk Management tool with elevated administrative rights. Click the Start menu button and type diskmgmt.msc into the search box and then right-click the diskmgmt.msc entry to get to the Run as Administrator item in the context menu, as shown in Figure A.

Clicking Run as Administrator will load the Disk Management Tool, which will look something like Figure B. As you can see, we have some empty space to work with after shrinking the volume previously.

Right-click on the empty area to get the context menu and then navigate to the New Simple Volume menu item, which will start the appropriate wizard (Figure C).

You can take the empty space and divide it into several drives, but in our example, I am going to use the remaining space for the new simple volume (Figure E).

On the next screen in the wizard you are asked to assign a drive letter or path to the new volume (Figure F). You have three choices:

* Assign the following drive letter: Windows has suggested the next available drive letter. This is the default and will most often be the preferable choice.
* Mount in the following empty NTFS folder: Instead of using a drive letter you can mount the drive to a folder. This essentially makes the drive look like and operate like a folder in Windows.
* Do not assign a drive letter or drive path: You will have to assign a letter or path later in order to make the drive usable for storage.

We’ll just stick with the default and make a new drive E.

The screen in the wizard deals with formatting our new drive (Figure G). In general, you should choose to format this drive under the NTFS file system; however, you can also choose to use FAT32. The other default setting should not be used unless you know have a specific reason to change the allocation size.

You should give your new drive a label to help you distinguish the new drive from other drives on your system. A quick format will take less time, but it will not find and mark bad sectors on your drive that could cause problems later.

NTFS drives have built-in compression systems that are essentially seamless to users and can be a good choice if storage space is a premium.

The last screen in the wizard (Figure H) gives you a summary of your choices and the opportunity to step back and make changes. When you are satisfied with your choices, click the Finished button.

When the formatting is complete, you will have a new drive visible to Windows 7 and ready to store your files (Figure I).
