Over View Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 : MCTS 70-662 and MCITP 70-663

A number of articles have been published on Windows PowerShell, but very few of these are dedicated to Exchange Server 2012. I am an Exchange administrator. I am not a developer. Yet, I have found an increasing need to improve my development skills in order to be an effective administrator—first with Exchange Server 2007, then with Windows Server 2008, and now with Exchange Server 2010. Fortunately, with Windows
PowerShell and Exchange Management Shell, I can do so without having to learn a complicated language and extensive developmental concepts—something I really have no desire to do as an administrator. With just a simple verb-noun combination, I can achieve fantastic things in the Exchange organization and still be able to sleep at night without pieces of code swirling around in my head as I dream.

What’s New in PowerShell 2.0
Microsoft Windows PowerShell is a combined command-line shell and scripting language designed primarily for administrators, not developers. Prior to the introduction of Windows PowerShell into operating systems, administrators were forced to learn a programming language such as Visual Basic to fully manipulate objects in the Active Directory and Exchange environment if the graphical user interface (GUI) did not provide
an easy means for administration. Mainly, an administrator found the need for additional tools, such as custom VB scripts, when he or she wanted to manage objects in bulk. PowerShell 2.0 includes significant changes from the original version.

Windows sales defy predictions, grow 4%

All credit to businesses upgrading to Windows 7, says Microsoft

Computerworld - Stronger-than-expected sales of Windows helped Microsoft post a 6% increase in revenue for the first quarter of 2012, the company said yesterday.

The Windows and Windows Live division brought in $4.6 billion during the three months ending March 31, an increase of 4% over the same period the year before.

That was a turnaround of sorts: Windows' revenue for the quarter was just $112 million less than sales during the last three months of 2011, traditionally a strong quarter in the calendar because of holiday purchases of PCs. But in 2011's fourth quarter, Windows revenue was down 6% compared to the year before.

Business purchases of PCs -- Windows' revenue is directly tied to the sale of new machines -- fueled the gain, with system sales to companies up 8% year-over-year, while consumer computer sales, long sluggish, remained flat.

"The business PC is what really drove the Windows business," said Peter Klein, Microsoft's chief financial officer Thursday during an earnings call with Wall Street analysts.

Most analysts had expected a poorer performance, largely on the projections by Gartner and IDC, which initially predicted a PC sales slump but then last week raised their estimates, saying that shipments actually increased about 2% in the quarter.

Microsoft estimated that PC sales grew between 2% and 4% during the quarter.

PC sales have struggled to match previous periods because of tougher competition from tablets and smartphones for consumer dollars, and the lingering effects of a hard disk drive shortage sparked by flooding last year in Thailand.

The Windows group accounted for 27% of the company's revenue for the quarter, second behind the Business division, which handles the Office line. Windows' piece of the pie was larger than the previous quarter -- the division contributed 23% of all revenue in the last three months of 2011 -- but slightly less than the same period a year before.

Windows 7 continued to gain ground among corporate users, said Klein, who claimed that 40% of all enterprise desktops were running the OS. Klein did not name a source for that number, but Net Applications, which Microsoft's IE team regularly cites, said that 41% of all machines running Windows worldwide last month did it with Windows 7.

As executives touted the strong sales for Windows 7, they also, although only in the broadest strokes, reminded analysts of the upcoming Windows 8.

After noting that the next fiscal year -- which runs July 1, 2012, to June 30, 2013 -- will include an "unprecedented refresh" of the company's core products, Klein was upbeat about Windows 8, even though customers have seen only a beta of the desktop version and nothing at all on ARM.

"With Windows 8 and its availability on both x86 and ARM, we believe the ecosystem will capitalize on the new range of capabilities and scenarios Windows 8 enable," said Klein in prepared remarks.

Although executives divulged no new information about Windows 8's release date during yesterday's conference call, Bill Koefoed, the general manager of Microsoft's investor relations, said that the development of Windows 8 and Windows RT -- the official name for the version designed for ARM processors -- is "on our schedule."

Klein dodged a question from one analyst about revenue swings later this year caused by Windows 8 upgrade giveaways. "We haven't said anything and will not today, but we'll have more to talk about in terms of programs and promotions as we get closer to the launch date," Klein said.

With Windows 7, Microsoft offered free or nearly free upgrades to people who purchased a new Vista PC in the months before and after its launch. The company also aggressively discounted Windows 7 upgrades during a two-week pre-sale period. Microsoft may repeat one or both of those promotions with Windows 8.

If it does, the deals will impact the bottom line: Two years ago, Microsoft deferred $1.7 billion in revenue to account for the Windows 7 upgrades due Vista PC buyers.

Klein also sidestepped a question about whether Windows XP's looming retirement will create additional incentive to upgrade to Windows 7, or even Windows 8, and accelerate sales of those editions. "Obviously, it's high on the priority list for CIOs to upgrade their business desktop [from XP]," said Klein. "Exactly how that will play out over the next couple of years is hard to say."

XP will fall off Microsoft's support list in early April 2014.

Is an IT boot camp the way to shape up for Windows Vista?

Because we all know how well cramming for exams worked in college

Computerworld - The attractions of an accelerated tech training course are obvious. Why spend weeks or months reading boring computer books or lurching through online courseware when you can have high-energy instructors helping you to cram all that information in over a single long weekend?

Nicknamed boot camps for their abbreviated length and grueling methods -- 12 hours in class per day, along with assigned homework at night, is not unusual -- some even have students taking certification exams by weekend’s end -- and still boast a respectable pass rate.

MCTS Training, MCITP Trainnig

Unsurprisingly, a number of boot camps aimed at training both system administrators and end users in Vista and Office 2007 are starting to spring up.

The courses aren't cheap. Prices typically start at more than $1,000 for a long weekend’s course, and the costs go up rapidly from. But some experts see value in these crash courses. IT boot camps "are very helpful to get a team up to speed prior to a software deployment," said Cushing Anderson, an analyst at Framingham, Mass.-based IDC.

A constellation of camps

Training Camp, the boot camp division of TechTrain, will begin offering Vista boot camps in June with a three-day course aimed at helping Microsoft Certified Technology Specialists (MCTS) pass the certification exam for configuring Vista.

Jeff Porch, director of educational services at Philadelphia-based Training Camp, says the $2,195 course is aimed at people who provide IT support, both in person and via call centers.

All of the instructors employed by Training Camp are Microsoft Certified Trainers (MCT). Classes are limited to 10 students, allowing them to get a lot of one-on-one attention, Porch said. They are also worked hard. "The camp will run from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., with an hour for lunch and an hour for dinner," Porch said.

Training Camp is also developing courses for Office 2007 and Exchange that should be available by the end of the summer, Porch said.

Other providers include Vigilar Inc.'s Intense School, which is holding a series of five-day Vista-Office 2007 boot camps starting in August. The $2,495 course will prepare students for the Vista configuration exam. Intense School Chief Technology Officer Barry Kaufman said 97% of students in Intense’s MCSE classes pass their exams.

Atlanta-based CED Solutions’ six-day, $2,995 course claims to go one better by preparing students for two MCTS exams on configuring and deploying Vista and Office 2007.

Meanwhile, Houston-based ETEC is, until the end of this month, letting students who register for a 14-day, $5,990 course for Microsoft Certified System Engineering (MCSE) certification also attend a three-day Vista boot camp for free.

Learn IT is offering three-day Vista deployment courses for $1,400 in San Francisco and Santa Clara, Calif. Compared to Training Camp's courses, Learn IT's weekday classes run at a relatively light pace -- 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. -- and the company makes no mention of preparing students for passing certification tests.

Certifications less valuable today

One reason why not all training companies offer certification exam preparation may be because of the recent decrease in the prestige of technical certifications. The dot-com crash left many IT workers, even those with certifications and years of experience, unemployed for many years..

Amazon Web Services launches CloudSearch

The service is based on Amazon's A9 technology and aims to simplify the use of search

IDG News Service - Amazon Web Services has introduced CloudSearch, which allows users of its cloud to integrate fully managed and highly scalable search functionality into their applications, the company said on Thursday.

CloudSearch is based on the same A9 technology that powers search for Amazon.com, the company said

To use the search functionality, IT staff start by creating a search domain and uploading the data they want searchable. CloudSearch then automatically provisions the technology resources required and the indexes needed, the company said.

To make data searchable, it first needs to be described in the Search Data Format, which can be done using JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) or XML text files, according to an FAQ.

CloudSearch automatically scales as the amount of searchable data increases or as the query rate changes, and enterprises can change search parameters, fine tune search relevance and apply new settings at any time without having to upload the data again.

Settings are changed using the AWS Management Console, which is also used to administer Amazon's other services.

As with its other cloud services, Amazon pitches the new addition as way to add search capabilities without needing a lot of expertise.

However, figuring out what the service will cost may not be as simple. Users are billed on a monthly basis for search instances, document batch uploads, IndexDocuments requests and data transfer.

As a managed service, CloudSearch determines the size and number of search instances required to deliver low latency, high throughput search performance. The service builds an index and picks the appropriate initial search instance type to ensure that the index can be stored in RAM.

Instance types come in small, large and extra large, which cost 12 cents, 48 cents and 68 cents per hour.

New IndexDocuments are created by CloudSearch when the IT staff make configuration changes to the index, for example by adding a field. The cost is 98 cents per gigabyte of data stored in the search domain.

Added to that is 10 cents per 1,000 batch upload requests, which each can be up to 5MB. The last part of the bill is a charge for the amount of data transferred out of CloudSearch. In the US East region, the first 10TB costs 12 cents per GB, according to Amazon.

On the CloudSearch website, Amazon details a cost example that includes 100MB of data and adds up to $86.94 per month.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 10 Design: 10 Essential Features

News Analysis: Microsoft is already touting Internet Explorer 10, even though that browser’s predecessor has been around for just weeks. Even so, if Microsoft is sketching out the design for a rapid browser update, then it’s time to discuss what Internet Explorer 10 should offer.

Although it has been out for just weeks, Internet Explorer 9 is already old news in Redmond. Microsoft on April 12 took to its blog and the MIX Conference to discuss Internet Explorer 10, the follow-up to its latest browser release. According to that blog post, Microsoft has been working on Internet Explorer 10 for three weeks already. Its launch schedule will likely follow the company’s plan of offering worthwhile updates to its browser every few months.

At this point, Microsoft hasn’t said much about what Internet Explorer 10 will offer. But that doesn’t mean that it isn’t a good time to think about some of the key factors that would play a role in the success or failure of Microsoft’s upcoming browser.

With that in mind, here are some suggestions for some of the essential features that Internet Explorer 10 should offer when it eventually launches. Some of the items build upon the successes of Internet Explorer 9, while some try to address that browser’s shortcomings. In either case, if Internet Explorer 10 has the following elements, it has a decent chance for success.

MCTS Training, MCITP Trainnig

Best Microsoft MCTS Certification, Microsoft MCITP Training
at certkingdom.com

1. Iron-clad security
Over the years, Microsoft has caught flak from critics who say that Internet Explorer isn’t as secure as it could be. Those complaints are based partly on a reputation for weak browser security that Microsoft earned long ago. Internet Explorer 6, for example, is considered one of the least-secure versions of the browser ever released. But Microsoft has improved Explorer’s security with subsequent releases and patches. Now Internet Explorer 9 is more secure than any version of the browser that came before it. Microsoft must build upon that success and ensure that when Internet Explorer 10 comes out, it will have even better security.

2. Ample time to be used
Microsoft’s idea to release meaningful updates of its browser every few months is an issue for those who like to use one option long enough to get comfortable with it. With Internet Explorer 10 apparently right around the corner, Internet Explorer 9 seems quite likely to fall into that trap. Microsoft must ensure when it releases Internet Explorer 10 it remains its go-to browser for at least six months. That way, it can capitalize on those who want a single browser to stick with. Too much turnover can be a bad thing.

3. Speed, speed, speed
Speed has always been an issue with Internet Explorer. For example, when Google Chrome first launched, it easily bested Microsoft’s alternative. But Internet Explorer 9 was a vast improvement over its predecessor when it comes to page-loading times. In most cases, Internet Explorer 9 matches Mozilla’s latest release, Firefox 4. Microsoft’s goal with Internet Explorer 10 should be to further improve page-load times and make it the fastest browser in the market by a wide margin.

4. More platform support
One of the biggest complaints about Internet Explorer 9 is that it’s only available to Windows Vista and Windows 7 users. Windows XP users are stuck with Internet Explorer 8. If Microsoft wants to make its next browser even more popular, it should consider making it available on other platforms, including Mac OS X. Even Windows XP support wouldn’t be such a bad idea. Admittedly, the chances of that happening are slim. But considering it’s competing against Google and Mozilla, two companies that offer support across all major operating systems, it wouldn’t be such a bad idea for Microsoft to follow suit.

5. Justification for the fast refresh
As mentioned, Microsoft plans to update Internet Explorer quite often going forward. This looks like a strategy to try to stave off further market-share inroads by Firefox, Chrome and others. That’s fine, as long as the software giant can justify such fast refreshes. If consumers and especially enterprise customers start finding that the new versions of Internet Explorer aren’t enough of an update to justify downloading them, it could also spell trouble for Microsoft’s browser market share. As nice as rapid updates can be, they can also cause trouble.

6. The same design
When Microsoft launched Internet Explorer 9, it showed off a vastly improved design that maximizes the amount of screen real estate dedicated to Web pages. It also made the menu system much easier to navigate. Its decision to have the address bar double as a search box was a welcome addition. In Internet Explorer 10, Microsoft shouldn’t change a thing on the basic Web page interface. Until Mozilla and Google come up with something new, Internet Explorer 9’s design is perfect for what Microsoft wants to achieve.

7. Continue to double down on HTML5
Internet Explorer 9 was an important update because of its support for HTML5, the Web standard that could eventually unseat Adobe’s Flash. In Internet Explorer 10, Microsoft needs to continue to double down on HTML5 and ensure that it is throwing its full support behind the platform. If it can do that, it should be able to future-proof itself for any major shifts that might be occurring on the Web.

8. Fix odd browsing quirks
After using Internet Explorer 9 for an extended amount of time, users will find some odd browsing quirks that Microsoft will need to address in its successor. For one, some Web pages aren’t properly rendered in the browser. Some users said that they were experiencing crashing issues. Admittedly, the quirks being witnessed by users aren’t widespread, and they’re to be expected from any browser. But Microsoft should do its best to find issues that are annoying Web users and fix them in its upcoming browser release.

9. More power efficiency
One of the nicest things about Internet Explorer 9 is that it improves power efficiency on Windows-based laptops. In fact, that point is one of the key draws of Internet Explorer 9’s use on laptops, compared with other browsers. Considering power efficiency is such an important factor in the enterprise (Microsoft’s key customer base), and consumers are always looking to extend their battery life for as long as possible, the software giant should think seriously about bringing even more power efficiency to Internet Explorer 10.

10. A good reason to switch from Firefox, Chrome
Internet Explorer 9 is a solid browser that’s fast, well-designed and more secure than its predecessors. Microsoft did a fine job of proving that point. However, the company didn’t do a good enough job of proving why its browser is better than Firefox 4, which came out around the same time, or Google’s Chrome. With Internet Explorer 10, Microsoft must make its case much clearer. It needs to deliver an experience that appeals to Microsoft fans and even makes converts of Chrome or Firefox. Simply put, Microsoft needs to give a good reason for Chrome and Firefox users to switch to its new browser.

Google Drive will offer 5GB of free storage, leak suggests

Google's cloud storage service rumored for release next monthIt looks as though Google will offer users 5GB of free cloud storage space on its new Drive service.

According to a leaked image obtained by the Talk Android blog, Google Drive will give users "5GB from the start" with the ability to "upgrade to get more space at any time." The cloud storage service also says that users will be able to "put files in Google Drive" where they can then be accessed via "desktop, mobile phone or tablet, and drive.google.com."

TECH ARGUMENT: Amazon Cloud Drive vs. Apple iCloud
If the leaked image proves accurate, it will mean that Google is matching the 5GB of free data storage currently offered by Box, Amazon Cloud Drive and Apple's iCloud to all users, and is exceeding the 2GB of free data storage offered by Dropbox to all users. There are no details yet on how much additional storage space users will be able to purchase on Google Drive, but it will likely fall somewhere between the 50GB of maximum cloud storage offered by Box, Apple and Amazon and the 100GB limit that Dropbox offers subscribers.

Google is a relatively later entry into the cloud storage market, as Apple has had its cloud storage service up and running since last June while Amazon has had its Cloud Drive app running since last March. Google has already been offering a cloud-based music service, Google Music, that lets users store up to 20,000 songs online where they can be accessed from any computer, tablet or smartphone with an Internet connection.
