Google ads chief: Personalization is the company's next big thing

Google's top advertising executive, Susan Wojcicki, said on Wednesday that Google's biggest innovations over the next several years will be in personalized search results and ads.

Her remarks, made at a presentation at the Search Marketing Expo conference, come amidst substantial controversy about the consolidated privacy policy the company will officially adopt March 1.

In fact, both Wojcicki and Jack Menzel, a Google director of product management who addressed the conference on Tuesday, acknowledged that the Internet giant is still figuring out how exactly to handle personalized search queries and advertising content.

Asked what big innovations users could expect from Google in the next three to five years, Wojcicki recounted her own personal-best Google advertising experience. When her 3-year-old daughter announced she wanted to take Chinese lessons, Wojcicki asked all of her friends who the best teacher might be. After talking to several people, she got a name. She then realized that on the very page displaying her initial email request, the same teacher's name appeared.

"If this happened all the time, I wouldn't have to go ask my friends. I could just have Google magically tell me," Wojcicki said. "To do that, we'll have to do some of the work that we're doing now" in terms of personalization and "getting to know our users better."

Wojcicki made the same point when she discussed Google+, which earned just three minutes a month of its users' Web time in January, according to a recent Wall Street Journal article citing comScore figures.

She suggested that Google+ was the gateway to "the next generation of Google products," although users may not understand that yet. Those products will be "different because our users are logged in and are telling us something about themselves."

Wojcicki envisioned a positive user experience resulting from different users typing in the same "best vacations" search. Her results might be more family friendly, she said, describing precisely the kind of controversial type of conclusion about a user that the Internet giant could make by analyzing the combined usage data it will have on that person when the new privacy policy kicks in.

She described ads as just more information, and said she hopes Google will reach a point where it provides only ads that users "want to see."

Oracle discusses Taleo product plans, girds for new battle with SAP

Oracle moved quickly on Friday to lay out its plans for the HCM (human capital management) software market, a couple days after rival SAP did the same thing.

SAP and Oracle have each made significant acquisitions of cloud-based HCM vendors in the past few months, with SAP paying US$3.4 billion for SuccessFactors and Oracle announcing plans to buy Taleo for $1.9 billion earlier this month.

While many companies have already invested in a core human-resources software system for areas such as payroll and benefits management, Taleo will bring Oracle applications on the fringes of the HCM category, such as recruitment and employee onboarding, that can be sold into existing and new accounts. Taleo will also give Oracle increased relevance in the cloud software market, as well as staff with hands-on experience running a SaaS (software-as-a-service) business. SAP is seen as getting similar benefits from SuccessFactors.

Once the Taleo acquisition is complete, Oracle will have "the most comprehensive set of enterprise cloud offerings in the world," said Oracle Co-President Mark Hurd during a webcast event on Friday. And Taleo's software "clips directly into" Oracle's own Fusion HCM cloud application, he added.

Oracle wants to offer customers a complete suite of HR applications that includes embedded BI (business intelligence), social network and mobile capabilities, said Thomas Kurian, executive vice president of product development. "We feel we'll allow organizations to find the best people, have lower turnover and have the best results."

Kurian sought to explain how Taleo's products will work alongside Oracle's existing HR software.

Customers will be able to "plan, predict, and optimally source [their] workforce," he added. They'll also gain the ability to identify employees who may be at risk of leaving through predictive analytics, Kurian claimed. Those top performers can then be retained with help from a combination of Taleo and Oracle's software for internal career development, compensation management and other areas, he added.

Taleo's recruitment and employee on-boarding software, for which it is well-known, will become preferred offerings, according to a slide Kurian presented.

But Oracle intends to unify the companies' performance management software into a single product, while providing "a seamless upgrade for all customers," Kurian said.

Oracle intends to integrate Taleo with its Oracle Public Cloud, on which Fusion HCM runs. This will give the Taleo applications new capabilities for identity management, data services and analytics, Kurian said.

Executives repeatedly noted that Taleo Business Edition, which is aimed at smaller companies, will continue to be offered and supported. This was likely done to quell concerns from customers about that version, since Oracle has focused mostly on how Taleo's Enterprise version will fit in with its products, said IDC analyst Lisa Rowan.

Kurian also emphasized that Oracle will continue offering talent management software for use with Oracle as well as non-Oracle HR systems, both on-premises and in the cloud.

This likely reflects a fear on Oracle's part of losing Taleo customers who are now running applications from competitors like SAP, Rowan said.

Oracle drops one Java patent claim against Google

Oracle has decided to give up on one of the patent claims it brought against Google in its lawsuit over alleged Java intellectual property violations in the Android mobile OS.

Earlier this week, Google asked for permission to file a motion for summary judgment that would toss out Claim 14 of U.S. Patent No. 6,192,476, arguing that a court ruling in January "construed Claim 14 to cover patent-ineligible subject matter."

But in a letter filed Friday in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, Oracle said it would no longer pursue redress under the patent.

"As part of its continuing effort to streamline the case for trial and make best use of the Court's and parties' resources, Oracle has today by separate letter to Google withdrawn the assertion of Claim 14 of the '476 patent, the only claim that is the subject of Google's prA(c)cis letter (and the only remaining asserted claim of the '476 patent)," the letter from Oracle attorney Michael Jacobs states. "Accordingly, Oracle requests that the Court deny Google's request for leave as moot."

It had already been unclear whether Claim 14 of the patent would make it to trial, given its rejection by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in December following a reexamination.

The vendor had until later this month to file a response to the rejection, but Jacobs' letter to the court on Friday seems to rule out that option.

Oracle filed suit against Google in August 2010, claiming that Android violated a number of patents and copyrights it holds on Java, the open-source programming language. But Google has denied wrongdoing, asserting that Android uses a "clean-room" implementation of Java that doesn't infringe on Oracle's intellectual property.

Cloud Software Consolidation - Is it all good?

How do you look at the recent cloud application software acquisitions. Are you a bit skeptical about what these deals mean to you? Read on as Brian looks at the deals from a customer’s perspective.

Best CCNA Training and CCNA Certification and more Cisco exams log in to Certkingdom.com

Late last week, Oracle announced its intended acquisition of Taleo . Taleo is a fairly significant player in the talent management and human resource software world. I have attended numerous briefings with Taleo management over the years and have seen them acquire a number of complementary technologies during that timeframe (e.g., Vurv).

This acquisition comes on the heels of SAP’s planned acquisition of Success Factors (another cloud HR vendor) and Oracle’s acquisition of RightNow (a cloud CRM vendor).

For the record, I’m not a huge fan of some kinds of software acquisitions. I’m very cautious about deals involving large software companies and older software companies. I also get concerned when a progressive, modern vendor is snapped up by slow moving behemoths that excel in running end-of-life product lines. On the other hand, when small, nimble, highly innovative firms are acquired, it can often bring massive new capabilities to the acquirer.

How you feel about a deal depends on whether you are an investor or a customer. Investors are looking for deal synergies, up-sell or cross-sell opportunities, cost reductions/efficiencies, etc. Customers want to know if the product will be around several more years, whether the product will get enhanced over time and what happens to customer support. Generally, I find that these two sets of goals are often incompatible but usually the investor view is the one that gets a lot of press coverage.

I am taking the customer perspective in analyzing these deals. Aspects of these deals (or prior software acquisitions) leave me less than excited for the customers of the acquired companies. Why is this?

1) Existing customers often get the short end of the stick. Chances are they will be promised new, different, technical architectures that may make some of their prior integration efforts no longer valid. Can you say re-implement?

2) The acquired product may be eliminated altogether. Taleo, for example, migrated the Vurv customer base to the Taleo product line.

3) The acquired products may become frozen in time. The acquiring firm may promise all sorts of continued love, affection and tender loving care for the acquired customers. They may fail to deliver much in that regard, though. Seriously, they know you’re already committed to the product so why should they expend energy and money on you when they could be focused on all-new customers instead?

4) Prices may increase. I’m fairly certain that some of the customers of the acquired companies may see requests for higher fees as part of a condition to accept newer releases of the core product or the underlying tools with which it is built upon. Will the customers receive incremental value for this price increase? I have my doubts. Besides, the acquirer NEEDS this extra money to pay for the acquisition anyway….

5) Vendors will create incredible works of fiction to explain how they will rationalize these products into their product lines. Let’s face it, if the software solution your organization is using is acquired by a firm that already has three, four or five different acquired product lines of similar functionality, don’t you think it’s going to take either the suspension of disbelief or an amazing technical writer to create a story that shows how all of these diverse products from very different creators, across different time lines and technical platforms will somehow come together in some single rational scheme? I think a Pulitzer Prize should go to the author of some of these stories. Personally, I would drop the product as soon as possible and wait for the movie version of these “stories” to come out. My current idea is to get someone in Hollywood to remake “With Eight You Get Eggroll” to be about two software firms with four major, redundant product lines that decide to get married. Hilarity ensues as product line managers all fight for the one developer that could enhance a product. Let’s see who we could get to star in it…..

But what troubles me the most about deals like these is that few people seem to be discussing the real economics of these transactions and why they were driven in the first place.

1) Major, old-line software vendors have come to the awareness that they really do need a cloud software solution. Maybe their older on premise products, contrary to their protestations against this observation, are quite long in the tooth and can no longer be passed off as modern software solutions. In some cases, vendors may be making deals just to appear credible in the cloud software space. Buying credibility and being credible are two different things though. A lot of credibility may have been apparently purchased with these recent deals.

2) Software acquisitions usually often fall into two camps: acquisitions to buy the customer installed base and its attendant revenue stream, or, acquisitions of leading-edge technology to propel or leapfrog innovation efforts within the acquirer’s firm. The former is a clear market share and money grab while the latter is an innovation acceleration ploy. Given the size of some of these recent deals, it appears that these were done for the installed base and the attendant revenue.

3) As in the previous point, an acquisition that delivers little, all new innovative technology to either the acquired or acquiring firm’s customers delivers ‘value’ in the financial sense only. Except in the limited view that more customers can create more revenue that may eventually led to the funding of other research and development efforts, these deals will probably not advance the cloud computing chops of the acquiring firms much and less so for the acquired. I’d need a lot of convincing that the latter isn’t true.

Let’s look at the last bullet point further. Did these recent deals result in the acquisition of powerful platform as a service (PaaS) technology? Did these deals move the acquirers into large, well populated platform ecosystems that have tens of thousands of complementary applications and hundreds of thousands of developers? No. These deals possessed no such platform environment akin to that found in salesforce’s Force.com, NetSuite’s NS-BOS, Apple’s iOS or Google’s Android. No, these look like customer grabs to me.

The real winners in these deals were likely the shareholders of the acquired companies. These transactions created liquidity events for the shareholders and came at an opportune time as these firms would have likely faced significant R&D efforts to introduce new platform and platform extension capabilities to their underlying products.

Taleo, Success Factors and RightNow would likely have continued to have grown their respective markets over time albeit at modest growth rates. Taleo had a good relationship with Workday and was expanding its relationships with other third parties. Success Factors was experiencing good organic and inorganic growth as well. Both Oracle and SAP will likely succeed in cross-selling or up-selling these acquired product lines to their existing and significant customer bases and that should make the deals quickly accretive. But, without a platform on the scale of that which salesforce.com possesses, the value of these deals to the acquired and future customers seems a bit lacking.

Individual deal specifics aside, readers should note that more deals will likely happen in the cloud application software space. Make sure your firm has its plans, strategies, etc. for how it will deal with the market consolidation. If you don’t, you may have to settle with the ’strategy’ an acquirer has for you.

2012 is now underway and many people are wondering what is in store for antivirus 2012. And if you are looking for antivirus gratis this type of PC protection also can offer an impressive array of features for guarding your PC against harmful malware and viruses. In this article, we will take a look at some of the common and not so common features which are included in antivirus programs this year.

Enhanced Rootkit Detection

Many antivirus software and antivirus gratis programs are increasing the protection against rootkits. Rootkits are much harder to detect than the typical virus or malware. A rootkit is capable of bypassing most antivirus and anti-malware programs and then it hides deep inside your PC which means it goes undetected.

Rootkits have become more common and are harder to remove from your PC than a virus or malware. As antivirus programs become more advanced the programmers are resorting to rootkit code in an effort to get by antivirus technology.

For this reason, a popular enhancement for antivirus 2012 and antivirus gratis programs is rootkit detection. This means that the antivirus software is providing tighter security for your PC than in the past to protect your PC against savvy computer programmers that have malicious intent.

Sandbox

A sandbox is a program that is included in your antivirus protection software and has been built into the antivirus gratis programs for this year. The sandbox provides a designated area in your PC where potentially malicious files are stored to prevent them from infecting other files and programs in your computer. The malicious files are those they may have made their way past the antivirus software and into your PC. If the file is potentially harmful to your PC it will remain in the sandbox until it is removed.

Screensaver Which Scans for Malware

When you leave your PC sitting idle for any length of time it is still possible for your computer to be subjected to drive-by downloads and other malicious programs. Some of the antivirus 2012 and antivirus gratis programs offer a screensaver that will automatically scan the drives on your PC for viruses and malware as soon as the screensaver kicks in. This feature ensures your PC is protected even when you are away working on another task.

DNA Matching

The newer antivirus software offers a feature called DNA matching which takes on a proactive approach to identifying viruses and malware. This type of technology which is becoming more common is capable of identifying the code profile of many different types of malicious programs to help detect new viruses and malware created by the same author. Many programmers of malicious software reuse programming codes in new viruses and malware. Antivirus 2012 software and many antivirus gratis programs are capable of identifying the DNA match between previously released malicious files and new ones created by the same author.

These are a few of the features which are included in the quality antivirus programs for this year. Many producers of PC protection software are continually working on ways to beef up the security for PCs which are connected to the Internet.

Antivirus Gratis is the best antivirus and antispyware protection for your computer. With this SKY internet security boost your slow internet with PC Speed software.

The Value of Higher Education

Have you ever thought about why saving for their children’s college education is such an important part of every parent’s financial plans? Why do so many of them take heavy loans just to put their kids through college?

Cisco CCNA Training, Cisco CCNA Certification

Best CCIE Training and CCIE Exams and more Cisco exams log in to Certkingdom.com

It’s understandable that parents do it because they have the best interests of their children at heart. They want to see their children succeed in life, and consider a college education fundamental to that success.

But why does our government give out so much money every year in financial aid for college students? How do they possibly benefit from spending billions of dollars in grants, scholarships, and loans, for something that seems to contribute just to an individual’s personal development?

It’s because the value of higher education goes far beyond personal benefits. In addition to contributing to a person’s individual development, higher education also helps in nation building.

According to a study conducted by College Board in 2004 on trends in higher education, college has both individual and societal benefits. Unfortunately, not enough effort has been made to spread awareness about the value of higher education to the society at large.

Benefits of Higher Education: Individual and Societal

The debate about the value of higher education is probably as old as college itself. We have all had animated living-room and classroom discussions about the benefits of higher education to us as individuals. So, in addition to the personal benefits that college has for individuals, it’s important to also focus on the societal benefits of higher education.

For an individual, college education has the potential to impact her personal, professional, financial, and social well-being. Study after study has been conducted to demonstrate that higher education can lead to higher earnings.

The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), in its 2010 survey, established that professionals with some sort of college education have higher weekly earnings as compared to those who have no post-secondary education. In fact, the higher an individual’s level of education, the higher his income. Naturally, professional or graduate degree programshave higher earning potential as compared to bachelor’s or associate’s programs.

In terms of employment opportunities, college graduates also generally fare much better than their high school counterparts. The DOL survey showed an inverse relationship between higher education and unemployment rates. The rate of unemployment among high school graduates was 10.3 percent in 2010, as compared to just 5.4 percent among those who held a bachelor’s degree, and 4 percent among those who had completed graduate degree programs.1

Not just the number of employment opportunities, but even the nature of jobs available to individuals improves with college education. A number of white-collar jobs, even entry-level ones, are available to college graduates only. Those with no post-secondary education, on the other hand, may get stuck in an endless cycle of minimum wage and low-skill jobs.

On a personal level, college education can build self-confidence and enhance an individual’s position in her community. Plus, some of the bonds formed in college can last a lifetime and can contribute to a person’s overall happiness quotient.

As for the societal benefits of higher education, some of the facts revealed by the College Board study may actually come as a surprise.

• Because college education can lead to lower levels of unemployment and poverty, it can result in higher tax revenues and lower dependence on social benefits.
• Those who go to college are believed to be better members of society, which is demonstrated by their contributions to their community through volunteer work, blood donation, voting in elections, etc.
• College graduates are also less likely to be perpetrators of crime and have lower incarceration rates as compared to those who have never been to college.
• And finally, believe it or not, college education leads to lower smoking rates. That may be because college grads have a higher sense of personal health and well-being.

Want your beer and wings faster? Order on the iPad, please

Nestled in a rugged case from integrator Hubworks, the 9.7-in. iPad is being tested for customers to make food and drink orders from their tables. They can also use the tablets to jump online to check out Facebook, Twitter and play interactive games.

The 830-store Buffalo Wild Wings chain is about to launch a second phase of the iPad pilot program at a Minneapolis location after working out technical kinks at a suburban Toronto site, said Tim Murphy, director of international business for the chain.

"Ultimately, we are trying to use the technology to enhance the customer experience," he said in an interview. "People are familiar with iPads, iPhones and Android tablets, so this would enhance that."

The chain hasn't decided whether to combine purchasing from the device with purely entertainment uses, something it hopes to measure in its tests, Murphy said.

If the chain decides the device can be used for entertainment, it might sell advertising on the tablets, license popular games or even design custom-built games suited to its audience and brand, he said.

Buffalo Wild Wings doesn't expect the devices to replace waiters. Instead, if customers make their own orders, waiters will be freed up to interact more with their guests and promote food and drinks or the in-bar live trivia games, Murphy said.

Other companies make table-top ordering devices used by some other restaurant chains, but most are smaller devices and some are fixed to a spot on the table, Murphy noted. He said he evaluated products by Ziosk, which provides a table-top surface touchscreen, and E la Carte, which uses a Presto tablet with a 7-in. screen.

Hubworks has included a charging capability and credit card reader in the rugged case, and has enhanced battery efficiency so that a single unit can last up 12 to 15 hours before being placed in a charging dock, Murphy said. Hubworks minimized the power drain with a screensaver and other features.

The Hubworks case doesn't cover the glass screen of the iPads, and waiters must wipe them down after every use to remove fingerprints. "We've not added a protective layer over the screen, but we're evaluating if we need one," Murphy said.

Hubworks sells each 8GB iPad with the case, a magnetic credit card reader slot and extended charging capability for $750; it also offers integration with point-of-sale systems selling its software as a service and charging licensing fees, said Aaron Gabriel, vice president of sales and marketing and co-founder of Hubworks Interactive. Units can be mounted to tables, but Buffalo Wild Wings has included an RFID security system to keep the devices from being stolen, he said.

Murphy said that there were complications integrating the iPad with its existing point-of-sales system, so the chain may simply have customers order their wings and drinks through a Web-based ordering system already in place. That system is used by customers who order food for pick-up.

Depending on how the trials go, Hubworks believes restaurants could offer more functions, including video chat using the newer iPad 2 at each table.

Why the iPad?P Partly because the device is well-known and larger than others on the market, Murphy said. Plus, many customers come to the sports bars in groups and stay for several hours at a time.

In the first test, while men in a group typically watched a football or hockey game, women in the group would pick up the iPad and launch Facebook, Murphy said. "We have a very captive audience with good sales volume in our restaurants, so we view this iPad as a way for customers to stay connected socially and not have to use their own device."

If the device cuts costs through advertising or offers greater restaurant efficiencies, so much the better. Those factors will be among those Buffalo Wild Wings evaluates.

"We have a lot to work out," Murphy added. "Nobody knows where this is heading."

The Basic Methodology of Software Development Services

Software development is a technically complex process which goes through various stages during the whole development procedure. The concept is termed as software development life cycle (SDLC) and involves various stages of software development. To successfully offer software development services, organizations should define a development methodology that suits the requirements of the project. Different projects may require different methodologies therefore software development service providers must evaluate the project requirements first and then formulate the strategy for the software development life cycle.

MCTS Certification, MCITP Certification

Best CCNA Training and CCNA Certification and more Cisco exams log in to examkingdom.com

Most of the software development service providers have a pre-defined methodology that is implemented while developing a software. The process gets a little modified according to the project requirements but the essence of the project development procedure remains the same. The basic stages of software development are as mentioned below:

Requirements Specifications: The first and foremost step while developing software must be gathering the requirements of the project. The organizations must start with analyzing the feasibility and the requirements of the project. Some questions that must be clarified in this phase are:

What are client’s expectations of the project?

What would the user want in the software?

Is the project technically feasible or not?

The above questions, along with many more, must be answered and properly justified before software development service providers move any further.

Design: This stage involves development of an outlay for developing the project with all the little details included. The project requirements are evaluated and an implementation strategy for achieving these requirements in the form of a software is formulated. The designing phase is divided into two categories i.e. system design and component design. The system design is design of the software as a whole where questions like how the individual components will interact with each other are answered. The component design phase, as the name suggests, deals with the planning for each individual component.

Implementation: The components are actually created in the implementation phase. The design layout created in the previous phase is implemented and converted into a machine language that the computer can understand and respond to. Programming languages such as C, C++, C#, Asp.Net, PHP etc are used according to the project requirement to achieve the best possible results. The source code and database are created in the implementation phase. Accurate and effective designing of the software is essential for a successful implementation of the software.

Testing: The testing phase usually starts after the components are created but in some cases the software development service provider can start the testing along with the implementation phase. This methodology may require a little more effort and time but the end solution is void of any discrepancies or errors as they are detected and removed as soon as a component is developed.

Installation: The components of the software are combined together and the completed software is installed and executed on a computer system. If all the previous phases have been performed expertly then there will be no problem in the installation phase. A thorough testing is again recommended after installing the software to make sure that the end solution is working as desired.

Maintenance: It has been noticed that almost every software goes through changes and modification after it is completed. This may be due to some new requirements, overlooked features or the change in the business strategy. This requires constant evaluation and maintenance of the software.

Most of the software development service providers follow the above described development methodology for creating softwares. It is the basic methodology of software development services. Once the software is completed and delivered successfully, the task of the service provider does not end. A professional software development company will offer maintenance services to insure a smooth and well functioning solution to their clients.

Apple's new vision of education

On Thursday, Apple made it clear that one of the next industries it hopes to disrupt and reinvent is education. It's an arena the company has a long history of working with: schools have been one of Apple's biggest market since the days of the Apple II.

While there have been pilot projects and full-scale deployments of the iPad as an educational tool, you can't say yet that it has truly revolutionized learning. While it's made researching information, viewing video, and working with interactive content more portable and more tactile, for mainstream education, many of those tasks have been available to desktops and laptops in the classroom for a generation.

Now, Apple has clearly set its sights on making the iPad a more fundamental part of the school experience -- and is out to transform that experience in the process.
iBooks 2

The newest version of iBooks offers students of all ages something that's more than the sum of its parts. In many ways, it simply consolidates all the learning tools technology had already brought to the classroom - audio and video, electronic texts, interactive quizzes, searchable indexes and glossaries, and the age-old ability to highlight and notate text for future reference. But, as Apple products often do, iBooks 2 not only consolidates features but pares them back to focus on the actual task at hand: learning.

This is what makes iBooks 2 and the handful of textbooks already available in the iBookstore unique among the many education tools that have come across computer screens over the past 30-plus years. There are features centered around the task of absorbing information, each tackling a subtly different way of learning -- visually through static and interactive graphics, by reading text, and through video clips. In typical Apple fashion, there are no unneeded bells and whistles.

The ability to highlight and take notes right in the text of a digital book is great by itself, and it certainly works better than scribbling in the margins or having to use a separate notebook because someone else will get the textbook during the next school year. Apple kept that feature relatively basic and focused on function. The ability to use notes as study cards is as simple and minimalist as it effective.

Having worked with schools and colleges for a decade as a technology professional, I'm most struck by the fact that no part of the iBooks 2 textbook interface is dumbed down or gimmicky. The experience respects that students are growing up as digital natives and don't need any Fisher-Price styling to learn. Instead, Apple stuck to its core minimalist aesthetic; the result brilliantly lets the content and the lessons take center stage, which makes the act of learning more effective and engaging.
iBooks Author

From my initial experience with Apple's new iBooks Author tool, I can say that the simplicity and effectiveness is astounding. Having worked with teachers and professors to develop digital curriculums (and having prepared and taught such cirriculae myself), iBooks Author makes the process surprisingly painless. While some might compare it to Apple's iWork, the closest analog I see is the company's now defunct iWeb application.

For educators and others interested in self-distribution of ebooks rather than sales through Apple's iBookstore, there's an option to simply export your books. Students and others can then use iTunes on a computer to add the book to their iPad, or it can be sent via email.

While Apple played up the one-click publishing option to the iBookstore, the process does require some legwork before you can get to that single click. As with selling anything in the iTunes Store, the process requires applying for and creating an account to sell through and appears to require that any books be submitted with an ISBN number. It also requires creating a sample version of your book.

If you're considering iBooks Author as a way of self-publishing, you should be aware that Apple's end user license agreement is particularly restrictive. It stipulates that although users can distribute ebooks created with iBooks Author outside of Apple's iBookstore, they can't do so for a fee or as part of subscription service. It also states that Apple will take its standard 30% cut of sales through the iBookstore and reserves the right to deny distribution of ebooks for any reason it sees fit. How Apple will enforce this isn't clear.

It also isn't clear how this will impact sales of the same content packaged outside of iBooks Author. What happens if you use a Word document as the source for both iBooks Author and other tools for distribution to Amazon's Kindle or Barnes & Noble's Nook stores, or create a limited print run sold on consignment to independent bookstores?
iTunes U

I've always been a fan of iTunes U. It's a great service for adults looking to informally continue their education and pursue interests and passions. It's also an amazing professional development tool for virtually any career. My biggest complaints have always been that isn't particularly easy to locate specific courses and that the sheer volume of downloaded audio and/or video is massive.

The new iTunes U app addresses those to complaints by offering an iBook-like storefront where you can search, browse, and rate courses and by offering the option of streaming or downloading lectures and related material. In fact, the entire app is very much like iBooks.

The brilliant part of iTunes U's relaunch is that it isn't limited to just lecture recordings. The entire syllabus of a course including assignments, reading material, references, and other easily available resources. That helps put the lecture portions in context and it takes iTunes U from hobbyist tool to being a complete learning and professional development solution. About the only thing this new format doesn't offer is credit for courses that you take (or, more accurately, audit) - though I wouldn't put it past Apple to work with at least one or two universities to offer credit through iTunes U.

So far, only a limited number of courses use all of the potential new features of iTunes U. That said, they are well worth checking out, both to get acquainted with the app and to learn about the topics that interest you. Personally, I can't wait to get started with the Open Yale Astronomy: Frontiers and Controversies course.

All previous iTunes U lectures are also available in the new app. You can easily differentiate lecture-only courses that take full advantage of new iTunes U features by the spiral-bound notebook icon in the iTunes U Catalog, as well as from their descriptions.

For schools and educators interested in creating courses, there's a relatively straightforward application process (which needs to be completed from a school-wide perspective) and a series of web-based creation and management tools.
Can Apple re-invent education?

Apple's new education tools are revolutionary, both in concept and in execution. The question, however, is whether Apple can reinvent how we learn (and teach) just as it changed the music and home entertainment industries or how we think about and use smartphones and other mobile devices.

I can only speak from a U.S. education perspective, but my years of working with public, private and special needs schools -- as well as community colleges and universities -- leaves me a bit skeptical that Apple can pull off an education revolution.

Public school districts in the U.S. will face big challenges trying to turn Apple's vision into reality. Even though some may succeed, there are many that can't -- lagely for financial reasons. School districts across the country are cutting programs, laying off teachers and staff, consolidating classes and even closing schools in an effort to make do with less money. The economy is making it difficult for schools to meet their financial needs through property taxes and with many cities and states facing major budget shortfalls, there may not be enough money for many districts to even contemplate investing in iPads and digital textbooks.

One of the challenges for districts is the need to provide equal access for all students. That means shouldering the burden of investing in iPads and digital textbook copies. There's an argument to be made that in time, they'll save money on replacing textbooks, but many middle and high school subjects are evergreen - algebra and geometry don't change much. Neither do foreign languages. That means those books can be reused year after year and even shared between students.

Then there's the challenge -- even where money is available -- of rolling out new teaching methods and technologies. The revolt among teachers and the teachers' union in Idaho against state-wide technology requirements in the classroom shows the resistance that remains to modernizing teaching in public schools. This issue alone may prove insurmountable in some communities.

There's also the issue of choosing textbooks. That includes not just selecting the texts a district or given teacher wants. There are regulatory issues that involve administration decisions and state-wide requirements when it comes to instructional materials and syllabi.

Implementation, of course, goes beyond just buying the iPads. Schools will also need the IT resources to deploy, manage, and support them. In poorer or rural schools, even on-campus Wi-Fi may not be an option, to say nothing about purchasing a mobile device management solution. IT departments will also need to work hand-in-hand with teachers to get them up to speed and comfortable with using iPads in the classroom.

Even in the most prepared districts, getting all the pieces -- human and technical-- in place and thoroughly tested will take time. Few districts are likely to get everything in place for the next school year. Many would be lucky to even get a pilot project with a handful of teachers and students in place by then.

Overall, Apple may be able to lead the way here, but it's going to be a long process.
Private schools - iPad and digital heaven

Private schools will most definitely have an easier time implementing iPads and digital textbooks. Private schools are funded by tuition and other fund-raising options like private grants, alumni membership fees and donations. Private schools also have the option of setting and requiring that supplies and materials be purchased by the families of students. That option can offset the cost of digital textbooks, and even iPads, if the cost isn't bundled into student tuition.

Private schools also have more operational freedom than public schools. While they still must adhere to government-mandated syllabi, they have a good deal of freedom when it comes to texts, materials and teaching methods to meet those requirements and are free to include their own additional curricula.

This means there will be far fewer barriers to entry when it comes to Apple's vision of digital learning. It also means that teachers have more flexibility in structuring lessons and more opportunities for professional development. And that should help ease a transition to the iPad and digital textbooks, as well as encourage creation of class and school-specific resources like textbooks and iTunes U programs.
Higher Education

Although Apple included the new iTunes U app in this week's announcement, there was little focus on higher education. This may be in part because technology use in higher education is a different ballgame than in K-12 schools. Students are expected to provide their own devices and manage them and their course work themselves.

While there is certainly a place in colleges and universities for digital textbooks, a much broader selection of texts and reference sources is available to faculty members, who often devise their own syllabus, lectures, assignments and materials. The iBookstore isn't likely to deliver the same cost advantage at colleges as it might for high school students. Even with partnerships with the major textbook vendors, Apple may not be able to keep costs down to acceptable levels. Indeed, a recent study in The Chronicle of Higher Education indicates that electronic texts don't generate significant cost savings to students.

That said, both iBooks Author and the ability to create and manage an iTunes U course have a lot of potential for higher education. In particular, the ability to distribute ebooks that are class-specific and private to a department or school may be particularly attractive.

It's also worth noting that Apple faces different competition in the higher education textbook arena, including college bookstores.
Continuing ed and professional development

As noted earlier, iTunes U is an amazing resource for adult learners and people looking to update or advance existing professional skills. For them, the revamped iTunes U is a potential goldmine. The combination of lectures, texts and related resources will give anyone access to a classroom experience. The new face of iTunes U also benefits Apple in that supporting material like books, apps and audiovisual content will be available though its various storefronts.

Lifelong learning may be one of the most incredible and yet easily overlooked achievements in Apple's vision of 21st century education. The company is making all of this learning content and tools available to virtually anyone, anywhere and at impressively low costs.

While Apple's education efforts will directly or indirectly affect how future generations learn as they grow up, perhaps the biggest feat is removing barriers to knowledge and supporting multiple learning styles from childhood through adulthood.

SAP buys training software from Germany-based Datango

SAP has acquired software from Datango that will allow it to add multilingual online help and training materials to enterprise software applications.

Best CCNA Training and CCNA Certification and more Cisco exams log in to Certkingdom.com

The move will broaden SAP's software training portfolio and could help its customers cut support costs through improved user training.

The Datango software makes it easier for enterprises to create documentation, classroom training presentations, e-learning materials and online help, which can then be translated into more than 40 languages at the click of a button, according to Datango's website.

A typical Datango training session might introduce users to a new application with a demo to explain its features, then allow them to practice what they saw in a simulated environment before performing specific tasks in the simulated environment with direct feedback. Datango's software can also show users the correct operating steps in a separate window that runs on top of the live system and add context-sensitive information to help users.

The end result should be fewer support calls and less time spent correcting errors, according to Datango.

SAP isn't providing much information on how it will use Datango's software, saying only that the two companies will capitalize on a trend toward creating applications with self-help and auto-teaching functions, it said.

SAP said it had acquired software and related assets from Datango, but didn't say whether any Datango employees are covered by the deal. The transaction, for an undisclosed sum, is scheduled to close by the end of March.

The online portal, which could be considered the first of its kind, is a hub for the former Beatle’s extensive library of digital music, lyrics, photos, collections, merchandise, blogs and more. Visitors to the site can get a tour and see a few items for free, but full access requires a premium (meaning, paid) membership.

HP built the digital library last year after being approached by McCartney’s team. Originally, the cloud-based digital library was intended solely for McCartney’s use.

At the time, it raised questions as to whether or not the content would be made public, and if this could open up a potential new revenue option for both cloud providers and the music industry.

Now, it looks like both of those possibilities are coming true. There are probably few musicians that have the kind of wealth of media content that McCartney does.

But this could definitely provide the music industry, which continuously needs to look up for new ways to make money in the face of piracy, with an innovative way to strengthen fan bases.

LTE explodes at CES

LTE has exploded at this week's Consumer Electronics Show, where the three top U.S. wireless carriers and dozens of other vendors are showing off how they plan to use the high-speed technology with new smartphones, tablets and even ATM's.

Alcatel-Lucent, which supplies LTE switches to the carriers, manned a booth showing several high-tech examples of how LTE wireless technology can support consumers, industry and government, such as providing police departments with the ability to transmit high definition, real-time video and data on crime suspects to officers in patrol cars.

The company also showed how video cameras installed inside police vehicles and connected by LTE to a cloud data respository can scan a crowd of people with facial recognition software or target license plates to identify car owners.

Alcatel-Lucent also displayed a utility vehicle, called Striker1, that was equipped with wireless bridging equipment designed to help police and fire personnel using different different radio frequencies frequencies to communicate with each other as well as with smartphones and tablets over IP, said Wayne Eveland, an Alcatel-Lucent engineer and former captain in the New Jersey State Police.

The Paris-based telecommunications firm also showed how inexpensive (compared to ruggedized laptops) Android tablets mounted inside a vehicle can use LTE to be a primary interface to the cloud. A plumber or utility worker could transmit to a remote expert a video image of a utility switching box and highlight with a finger or stylus where trouble had occurred.

Jason Collins, vice president of emerging technology at Alcatel Lucent, said Striker1 and other technologies displayed in its booth are designed to show how carriers and third party vendors can use LTE technology to improve practical applications.

The demonstrations were created based on the work of Alcatel-Lucent's NG Connect Program, a collaboration of 125 companies.

Much of the LTE news at CES centered on how well the carriers and infrastructure providers are working with a wide variety of partners to show potential users the benefist of faster wireless connections, especially for video communications and fast transfer of rich data content.

Of the three biggest U.S. carriers, Verizon Wireless has the biggest head start with 4G LTE networks operating in some 200 cities. The LTE networks offer average download speeds of more than 10Mbps, or about 10 times faster than predecessor 3G speeds.

Verizon's booth offered CES attendees a look at many demonstrations, including a Diebold ATM machine that uses bandwidth-rich LTE to send and receive live video, along with features that can help reduce theft and better help out customers.

Verizon and Samsung also jointly announced at CES that the Galaxy Tab 10.1, which runs over the Verizon 4G LTE network, has been certified that it meets Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) specifications, opening its use to financial professionals and government workers whose work requires the FIPS security gold star.

In a panel discussion on wireless innovation, John Stratton, president of Verizon's Enterprise Solutions Group, said that independent developers are working with Verizon's innovation centers in San Francisco and near Boston to develop new mobile applications.

AT&T, which runs LTE networks in 26 cities, announced five Android smartphones and a tablet that use LTE, as well as two Windows Phone 7.5-based smartphones at CES. AT&T also set up an Application Programming Interface platform with tools for independent developers.

Sprint, the first carrier to launch a 4G wireless technology on Wimax, said it will have LTE networks in 11 cities by mid-year.

Sprint also announced at CES that it plans to offer 15 devices, including the Android 4.0-based Samsung Galaxy Nexus smartphone, for its LTE networks. The Sprint devices will include particulars such as a Google Wallet application that works in point-of-sale applications with Near Field Communication technology.

Verizon Wireless sells the Galaxy Nexus with NFC but Google Wallet point-of-sales purchasing does not function over that network.

Sprint product managers were quick to acknowledge that while they lag behind Verizon and AT&T on LTE rollouts, its suppport for Google Wallet and other features, and its unique applications will give it a quick edge with consumers.

Fareed Adib, vice president of product development at Sprint, contended that the company can match Verizon and AT&T in innovation and support of independent developers.

"We've got one of the oldest carrier-developer communities, but now the focus has shifted and is really about getting apps to market faster with tools to support that," Adib said.

T-Mobile USA, which lost momentum when its planned $39 billion merger with AT&T collapsed in December under the weight of government concerns, has focused on continuing to build out its 4G HSPA+ network.

T-Mobile USA CEO Philipp Humm told reporters at a CES gathering that "T-Mobile is back," though analysts said the future of the carrier will ultimately depend on what parent firm Deustche Telekom wants to do with the U.S. subsidiary.

Some observers have speculated for months that T-Mobile will still be be sold off.

Organizations often have a patchwork quilt of management software. Some of this software addresses the need to manage the basic hardware infrastructure. Other tools are needed to address needs of the operating systems, the virtual machine software, database software, application frameworks and applications. While these tools make it possible to monitor the back end of a distributed computing workload, they don’t really address the end-to-end experience staff and customers have. Knoa Software’s CEO, Thad Eidman, took some time this week to discuss the problems many organizations have and how his company is addressing them.

Eidman suggests that end user performance management tools need to be able to address the following issues:

Application performance
Overall performance for the entire user environment
Process optimization
Threat management (by watching user behavior over time)

Knoa Software offers one tools that monitors the end-to-end performance for applications such as SAP, Oracle’s E-Business Suite, Oracle Siebel CRM, JD Edwards, PeopleSoftware Enterprise Suite and Amdocs. Another tool tracks usage of desktop applications, web-based applications accessable by Internet Explorer, Citrix and Microsoft access virtualization-based applications and can determine utilization time per user and per application.

Eidman pointed out that all of the products are based upon the the company’s “universal end-user experience and performance monitoring” technology. This technology provides the following capabilities:

Passive monitoring of end-user experience, behavior and performance
Sensing technology to support targeted field-level monitoring
Data collection tools for specific enterprise solution software
Data aggregation and modeling making it possible to easily go from raw data to useful specific understanding of what is happening — by application, user role, business process and management objective
Data presentation console to provide views of what has been observed
A reporting framework allowing organizations to develop their own specific reporting
An API framework allowing organizations to integrate their own custom applications and integrate Knoa’s products with application management products already in use

Knoa is already serving the needs of 200 major enterprise customers around the world.

Knoa, however, faces quite a bit of competition. I’ve spoken to at least 20 different suppliers of application performance management products over the last year alone. Eidman responded by telling me that Knoa’s focus is different that most of the others. Knoa, he pointed out, is trying to observe and report upon actual end user experience for business-critical applications rather than trying to be everything to everyone. That focus, he said, results in highly usable, powerful products.

A couple of Rather simple Ideas To help Observe An Aura

Several of the best psychics around the world can easily perceive auras. An aura can be defined as the energy that encompasses each and every living thing. Despite the fact that it isn't commonly noticeable through the eye, it's usually witnessed using the proper training. Watching any kind of aura is really a glorious life experience, because doing so reinforces the idea of spirituality on the planet. A great number of mediums and energy workers often spot auras all-around their clientele. It is much easier for these individuals to achieve this given that they have practiced this unique talent, as with every other muscle. Through practice, you will be able to witness and cherish the elegance of auras around you. Here are a handful of tricks for you to try out:

Staring upon the moon is thought of as one of the simplest ways to start seeing an aura. After dark, be seated outside the house and look towards the moon. Without much time and effort, you should notice a very white haze about the moon. This would be the moon’s aura, which is close to the way any kind of aura will appear all round someone. Take some time and permit your eye sight adapt to the moonlight. You shouldn't stare too hard, simply because this doesn't assist you to discover the aura. Calm down your attention and allow the moon to present itself to you. You might be able to see minor differences in the colour throughout the moon’s aura. The most basic hue to observe will likely be white, however, you might also see blue, golden haze or even purple.

A different way to see an aura would be to practice accompanied by a mate. Pick a quiet space where you won't be disturbed, and take a seat looking at eachother. Preferably, sit next to a white colored wall which does not possess any kind of themes to disturb you. Ideally you'll have very soft lighting, and then stare soundlessly into his or her eyes approximately 20 mins. This seems difficult but it's a great way to experience the energy all round another person. Just after a couple of minutes, the eyes will relax and you will probably come to notice a soft outline close to your partner. It should at first look vivid white, similar to the moon. But, the aura will vary in colour the more time you see it. Our auras can have a range of colors, which can include crimson, green, magenta, or lilac.

Aim to view an aura all over other sorts of living things too. In particular, staring at one's own family pet is an efficient strategy to practice. You need not be gazing into their eyes. If your four-legged friend is in the room with you, you may start to experience energy around them. This may even be useful with house plants, or any type of living thing. Basically try to remember that the majority of energy fields will look more white-colored, mainly because it is the least difficult to spot.

Do not feel disheartened if you are unable to come across energy at first. Clairvoyants succeed with this valuable "sense" multiple times a day. Bear in mind that you must practice should you choose to bolster that aspect of your mind. However, if you use these types of tips and hints for 12 minutes each day, you may begin to experience auras any place you go.

Researchers accuse Google of plotting to undercut Firefox

A security testing firm today said a recent report that named Google's Chrome as the most secured browser was flawed -- and part of a campaign by Google to undermine Mozilla's Firefox.

MCTS Certification, MCITP Certification

Best Microsoft MCTS Certification, Microsoft MCITP Training at examkingdom.com

Google denied the charges.

The work done by Denver-based security consultancy Accuvant, which released a report last week naming Chrome as more secured than either Firefox or Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE), was paid for by Google.

That raised the hackles of NSS Labs, a California company that tests browser security and antivirus software.

"This is a vendor-funded paper, and in these cases, the vendor is going to drive the methodology [of the testing], which appears to be the case here," said Vikram Phatak, the chief technology officer of NSS Labs, in an interview today.

When reminded that NSS Labs has conducted vendor-funded browser security research in the past -- Microsoft sponsored several NSS tests on anti-malware blocking technologies -- Phatak replied, "There's a reason why we don't do that anymore."

Calling Accuvant's testing process "skewed toward Chrome," Phatak argued that the consulting company's researchers ignored some key Firefox security features -- notably "frame poisoning," which blocks exploits of most layout code crashes; didn't give enough weight to such things as frequent security updates; and failed to use real-world anti-browser malware in its testing.

But Phatak and Rick Moy, president of NSS Labs, leveled more serious charges against Google than the allegedly-slanted report.

The two tied the release of the report with two other factors -- the apparent non-renewal of the Google-Mozilla search contract and a recent rise in Chrome's anti-malware blocking effectiveness -- to conclude that Google was running a campaign to knock Firefox out of the market.

"This tells a story, that Google is looking to go it alone now, and examining their position vis-a-vis Mozilla," said Phatak. "Google paid for this report, and it's part of a marketing campaign that's probably aimed at Firefox to cut off Firefox's revenues, cut if off from the Safe Browsing service, and then put out a report that says Firefox is less secure than Chrome."

"I think there's consistency in the data points," said Moy.

While Mozilla has said it was "in active negotiations" with Google about a new contract, it has declined to announce whether it has reached a deal with its long-time partner. That contract expired last month.

Income from the Google-Mozilla contract accounted for 84% of the $123 million the latter reported in revenue for 2010, the last year Mozilla has made public its finances.

The other factor Phatak and Moy used to bolster their claim of a concerted effort by Google to squash Mozilla's Firefox came from NSS Labs' own testing, which showed a five-fold jump in Chrome's effectiveness blocking malware in an 11-day period from Nov. 22 to Dec. 2.
Chrome, like Firefox and Apple's Safari, uses Google's Safe Browsing service to block malicious websites and potentially malware-infected downloads.

As Chrome's blocking rate soared from just 8% to 40% in that 11-day period, Firefox and Safari both declined to less than 2%.

NSS Labs' conclusion: Google is keeping some blocking protection from the Safe Browsing API (application programming interface) tapped by Firefox and Safari.

"It appears Google has purposefully withheld important malware protection from its Safe Browsing feed coinciding with its break from Firefox and release of the Google-funded report by Accuvant," NSS Labs wrote in a document published Tuesday (download PDF). This episode could indicate a more aggressive direction for Google."

NSS Labs also pointed to the release date of the Accuvant paper as another piece of the plot puzzle.

"The report was completed in July, but they held it for some reason," said Phatak.

Accuvant researchers denied that Google had in any way influenced their testing process or the conclusions they reached in their report.

"Google came to us and say, 'Hey, we want a browser security comparison [and] we don't have anything in mind, so come up with something to compare browsers,'" said Chris Valasek, a senior research scientist at Accuvant Labs, and one of six researchers at the firm that contributed to the testing and the ensuing report.

Accuvant approached browser security differently than earlier attempts, which have relied on comparisons of vulnerability counts, the time it takes a vendor to patch or pointing browsers toward known malware sites.

Instead, Accuvant created testing tools that allowed its researchers to investigate the browsers' -- and Windows' own, since it tested only on that OS -- anti-exploit mitigation technologies, and determine exactly what those technologies did or did not do.

Chrome, concluded Accuvant, was the most "secured" -- Ryan Smith, chief scientist in the group, made a point to use that term rather than "secure" -- browser in large part because of its sandbox, technology that isolates the browser and its processes from the rest of the operating system and machine.

Through sandboxing, Chrome ensures that exploit code which does make it onto a system either cannot, or can only in extreme circumstances, wriggle out of the browser itself.

Other anti-exploit technologies that Accuvant tested for Chrome, Firefox and IE included ASLR (address space layout randomization), DEP (data execution prevention) and JIT (just-in-time) JavaScript hardening.

"We like to think that we've advanced the state of the art in browser security comparison," said Accuvant's Smith.

"This is a better litmus than a shouting match," added Valasek, who pointed out that Accuvant has released not only its paper, but also the testing tools it built and the data those tools collected.

Accuvant's conclusion: Chrome was the most secured browser of the trio, with IE and Firefox in second and third place, respectively.

NSS Labs gave Accuvant credit for the research even as it claimed that the testing was flawed.

"They created some good tests, did some decent work," said Phatak. "It's a good first step, but it needs to be an evenhanded treatment. We think [the test methodology] skews the results in a way that biased the end results."

Phatak and Moy said that NSS Labs had "no contractual relationship with Mozilla" when asked whether it was fronting for the open-source firm.

Google denied that it had influenced Accuvant or that it had suppressed some of its malware blocking from the SafeBrowsing API.

"The analysis from NSS Labs is inaccurate," said a Google spokesman. "Google has not withheld malware protection from the SafeBrowsing API & [and has] played no role in deciding the points of comparison, choosing methodologies or data sets, or influencing the conclusions of the Accuvant paper."

Mozilla declined to directly react to NSS Labs' contention that Firefox was shorted by the Accuvant tests, or comment on the claims that the report was one part of a multi-stage campaign against the company.

Instead, Mozilla repeated a statement it issued last week when Accuvant released its paper.

"Firefox includes a broad array of technologies to eliminate or reduce security threats," said Johnathan Nightingale, director of Firefox engineering, in that statement. "Sandboxing is a useful addition to that toolbox that we are investigating, but no technology is a silver bullet."

Accuvant downplayed traditional comparison methods -- relying on vulnerability tallies, for instance -- as too variable by vendor, and said that anti-malware blocking was also worthless, noting, "The URL blacklisting services offered by all three browsers will stop fewer attacks than will go undetected."

Networking Terminologies

Different types of Networking Terminologies are:

Network Node

A device connected to a network. Examples are workstations, file servers, and print server interface devices to connect printers to the network. Each network node is a physical device connected to other nodes in the network by a cable (or by radio waves or infrared beams in wireless network).

File Server

The file server is the computer the network software runs on. It's where the files that are stored on the network physically live. The file server computer is used only as a file server and runs no user application unless the user is using a nondedicated network operating system (which is not recommended). The file server may contain just one network interface card (NIC) or multiple cards, and its connected to the either by direct wire bus (Ethernet), through a hub (ARCNET), or through a connector. Peer-to-peer networks don't use file servers. There is less network overhead on a peer-to-peer network, so there is less network software to store. Peer-to-peer network store shared data files on the local hard disks of the individual network workstations.

Workstations:

This is the user PC runs everyday applications. This machine can be a Macintosh, a Unix workstation, or an XT, AT, 386, 486 or Pentium PC. Some networks have more powerful workstations than file servers if the user application would benefit-for example, mathematical" analysis and computer-assisted design applications.

Network Card ( NIC):

The physical component installed in the computer to make the physical connection to whatever network wiring. Many network cards use idiot lights on the back of the cards to show if it is working properly.

Print Server:

Network software running on a PC dedicated to printing, or in a specialized network interface device( a small box which connects one or more printers to the network cable) makes a print server. The print server handles the printer. feeding it prints jobs from print queues stored on a file server. A separate print server computer is optional in the network, since the fileserver can do double duty, running print server software along with the NetWare operating software..

The Wire:

Type of cables used in routing the data across the network. Each type of cable has advantages and limitations.

1. Coaxial Cable:

The most common type of cable used with LANs is coaxial cable (coax). It is composed of a single wire conductor surrounded by a conductive wire shield, usually standard and braided wire. The shield protects the inner conductor form outside electrical interface and attached to an earth ground. This shield is also known as a drain because it directs electrical interference to the earth ground. The shield is covered with a polyvinyl coating that insulates the cable from the outside environment. Because of the built-in shielding, Coax can carry a data signal over long distances without loosing signal quality..

2. Twisted Pair Cable:

The second most common type of cable used on LANs is twisted pair. It consists of two or more wires covered by a thin rubber jacket and intertwined together or "twisted" to form a pair. The twisted prevents the wire from running side-by-side in the housing. When wires run side-by-side the signals from one wire may be inducted into neighboring wire creating interference known as crosswalk. Twisted pair can be shielded or unshielded.

3. Fiber Optic Cable:

Fiber optic cabling for LANs is the least common cabling method used primarily due to its high cost. It consists of a glass or special plastic filament, which runs the length of the cable. A light beam is directed through the filament. The beam is modulated various ways provide a signal. Fiber optic cable supports higher speed than coax or twisted pair and carries a signal over a greater distance without attenuating (signal weakening). Data transmitted over fiber optic cable is relatively secure from being "trapped", which makes this technology attractive to user with security concerns.
