Google ads chief: Personalization is the company's next big thing

Google's top advertising executive, Susan Wojcicki, said on Wednesday that Google's biggest innovations over the next several years will be in personalized search results and ads.

Her remarks, made at a presentation at the Search Marketing Expo conference, come amidst substantial controversy about the consolidated privacy policy the company will officially adopt March 1.

In fact, both Wojcicki and Jack Menzel, a Google director of product management who addressed the conference on Tuesday, acknowledged that the Internet giant is still figuring out how exactly to handle personalized search queries and advertising content.

Asked what big innovations users could expect from Google in the next three to five years, Wojcicki recounted her own personal-best Google advertising experience. When her 3-year-old daughter announced she wanted to take Chinese lessons, Wojcicki asked all of her friends who the best teacher might be. After talking to several people, she got a name. She then realized that on the very page displaying her initial email request, the same teacher's name appeared.

"If this happened all the time, I wouldn't have to go ask my friends. I could just have Google magically tell me," Wojcicki said. "To do that, we'll have to do some of the work that we're doing now" in terms of personalization and "getting to know our users better."

Wojcicki made the same point when she discussed Google+, which earned just three minutes a month of its users' Web time in January, according to a recent Wall Street Journal article citing comScore figures.

She suggested that Google+ was the gateway to "the next generation of Google products," although users may not understand that yet. Those products will be "different because our users are logged in and are telling us something about themselves."

Wojcicki envisioned a positive user experience resulting from different users typing in the same "best vacations" search. Her results might be more family friendly, she said, describing precisely the kind of controversial type of conclusion about a user that the Internet giant could make by analyzing the combined usage data it will have on that person when the new privacy policy kicks in.

She described ads as just more information, and said she hopes Google will reach a point where it provides only ads that users "want to see."

The DNA of the mobile ecosystem is changing. What opportunities will emerge during the course of this decade? Where are the new billion dollar markets? We will explore these questions and more throughout the article with the influential minds who are shaping the mobile industry.
The entire mobile ecosystem is going to hit $1 trillion market by 2014, according to Gartner who is a well-known market- researcher in the mobile world. Gartner advises enterprises to develop a "high-level mobile strategy," rather than committing to any particular device or platform.

What does it mean? It has been a long time that the mobile industry has set in this world. It first started off with the features of devices. Mobile devices like Motorola RAZR have changed the perception of the people using the device. The sole dominance during this phase was of the device manufacturers. This was followed by a phase in the mobile applications market that revolutionized the mobile market. A new phase of the mobile ecosystem emerged with the launching of iPhone in 2007 by Apple. The iPhone that was created by Apple gave a complete new user experience which was unmatched to the experience that was there in all other previous phones. This was the time when the mobile industry saw a new beginning. We say this as an ecosystem because Apple had created its own environment wherein nobody else other than Apple can participate. The ecosystem was closed and Apple had the sole rights of its device. Though other developers were also given a share to contribute to the system but the share is pretty small.

Now with the sole dominance of Apple , with its varied range of iPhone, iPad and iPods other competitors also came up with the market with some awesome features and here is where Google took a plunge and created Android . As a result of this there has been a sudden surge of demand for iphone applications and android applications. Google’s was a more open approach and it invited people from all sorts to take part in its development. There was an opportunity for a third ecosystem and saw the dawn of Windows. This is the third ecosystem that is emerging with a slow and steady pace. Nokia has surprisingly tied up with Windows to get their smartphones and to re-estabilish their position in the market. This phase is traditionally characterized by applications.

Going forward, the emerging phase is that of cloud services and streaming videos. The new era would be dominated by high-end applications and more complex end- to end experience including the cloud. Many mobile business systems will explore contextual cloud services hosted by others. In mature markets, including the U.S., smartphones will dominate device sales for the foreseeable future. Gartner analysts predicted. Many new device types such as tablets and e-book readers will emerge through 2012 but none comparable to the market share of smartphones and laptops. The smartphones market is very competitive with Apple’s OS (iOS) loosing to Google’s Android and onset of Windows

Oracle discusses Taleo product plans, girds for new battle with SAP

Oracle moved quickly on Friday to lay out its plans for the HCM (human capital management) software market, a couple days after rival SAP did the same thing.

SAP and Oracle have each made significant acquisitions of cloud-based HCM vendors in the past few months, with SAP paying US$3.4 billion for SuccessFactors and Oracle announcing plans to buy Taleo for $1.9 billion earlier this month.

While many companies have already invested in a core human-resources software system for areas such as payroll and benefits management, Taleo will bring Oracle applications on the fringes of the HCM category, such as recruitment and employee onboarding, that can be sold into existing and new accounts. Taleo will also give Oracle increased relevance in the cloud software market, as well as staff with hands-on experience running a SaaS (software-as-a-service) business. SAP is seen as getting similar benefits from SuccessFactors.

Once the Taleo acquisition is complete, Oracle will have "the most comprehensive set of enterprise cloud offerings in the world," said Oracle Co-President Mark Hurd during a webcast event on Friday. And Taleo's software "clips directly into" Oracle's own Fusion HCM cloud application, he added.

Oracle wants to offer customers a complete suite of HR applications that includes embedded BI (business intelligence), social network and mobile capabilities, said Thomas Kurian, executive vice president of product development. "We feel we'll allow organizations to find the best people, have lower turnover and have the best results."

Kurian sought to explain how Taleo's products will work alongside Oracle's existing HR software.

Customers will be able to "plan, predict, and optimally source [their] workforce," he added. They'll also gain the ability to identify employees who may be at risk of leaving through predictive analytics, Kurian claimed. Those top performers can then be retained with help from a combination of Taleo and Oracle's software for internal career development, compensation management and other areas, he added.

Taleo's recruitment and employee on-boarding software, for which it is well-known, will become preferred offerings, according to a slide Kurian presented.

But Oracle intends to unify the companies' performance management software into a single product, while providing "a seamless upgrade for all customers," Kurian said.

Oracle intends to integrate Taleo with its Oracle Public Cloud, on which Fusion HCM runs. This will give the Taleo applications new capabilities for identity management, data services and analytics, Kurian said.

Executives repeatedly noted that Taleo Business Edition, which is aimed at smaller companies, will continue to be offered and supported. This was likely done to quell concerns from customers about that version, since Oracle has focused mostly on how Taleo's Enterprise version will fit in with its products, said IDC analyst Lisa Rowan.

Kurian also emphasized that Oracle will continue offering talent management software for use with Oracle as well as non-Oracle HR systems, both on-premises and in the cloud.

This likely reflects a fear on Oracle's part of losing Taleo customers who are now running applications from competitors like SAP, Rowan said.

Incorporating Technology with Response to Intervention

School teachers and administrators employ many different strategies in an effort to bring the best possible education to each student. The modern response to intervention (RTI) method is designed to monitor student progress and provide proper differentiated or individualized instruction as necessary for academic success. When it comes to potentially difficult subjects such as math, having technological tools including virtual manipulatives and online games can make it easier to implement this complex teaching model.

Intense Adaptive Instruction

One of the hallmarks of response to intervention is differentiated instruction. Depending on where and how much a student is struggling, it may be necessary to tailor his or her educational experience to better address difficulties. To that end, RTI employs three tiers, each designed to focus instruction based on student performance and progress. Sometimes labeled as Benchmark, Strategic, and Intensive, each tier involves progressively more concentrated instruction, ranging from the classroom level to one-on-one instruction conducted outside of a classroom setting. Online games and learning tools fit right in to this model with a targeted teaching approach based on each individual student’s learning pace, level of comprehension and need for help. Using these tools can make it easier for teachers to address the individual needs of each student, as the programs are designed to automatically adapt to a child’s personal skill level.

Engaging Virtual Environments

Response to intervention techniques won’t work at all if the targeted students have a hard time paying attention or simply aren’t interested in learning. Online educational games help to solve this problem by taking difficult subjects such as math and presenting them in ways that are fun and engaging. When teachers can show kids that learning anything, even things that seem hard at first, can be fun, the response is often positive. Games are also beneficial to students whose learning styles make them better suited to an interactive environment. This is ideal for RTI since part of the model involves effectively targeting students in a way that will give them the greatest chance for academic success.

Essential Monitoring Tools for Teachers

In order to place kids in the proper response to intervention tier, teachers need a comprehensive understanding of the skill levels and academic progress of each of their students. Though traditional progress monitoring methods such as benchmark testing are often used to determine tier placement, these can be time consuming and detract from students’ overall learning experience. Online tools can automate this process by compiling data on each student in real time and forming detailed reports from the results. Instead of having to individually test every child, teachers can use these virtual reports to monitor their classes and identify at-risk students before they fall too far behind.

Response to intervention is meant to meet the needs of students at every level who require help to succeed academically. Internet-based educational games and progress monitoring tools aid teachers in proper placement of students and can be used to present intense individualized instruction that might not otherwise be possible in the classroom. By incorporating technology into the standard model of instruction, teachers can more easily tailor the day to day learning environment to better serve each student.

Jim Wheelin writes about many different educational topics for parents, kids and teachers. Lately, he has been on the lookout for learning programs that offer a response to intervention strategy to support his kids' development. Jim also encourages other to test educational games such as the ones offered at http://www.dreambox.com/math-intervention.

Oracle drops one Java patent claim against Google

Oracle has decided to give up on one of the patent claims it brought against Google in its lawsuit over alleged Java intellectual property violations in the Android mobile OS.

Earlier this week, Google asked for permission to file a motion for summary judgment that would toss out Claim 14 of U.S. Patent No. 6,192,476, arguing that a court ruling in January "construed Claim 14 to cover patent-ineligible subject matter."

But in a letter filed Friday in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, Oracle said it would no longer pursue redress under the patent.

"As part of its continuing effort to streamline the case for trial and make best use of the Court's and parties' resources, Oracle has today by separate letter to Google withdrawn the assertion of Claim 14 of the '476 patent, the only claim that is the subject of Google's prA(c)cis letter (and the only remaining asserted claim of the '476 patent)," the letter from Oracle attorney Michael Jacobs states. "Accordingly, Oracle requests that the Court deny Google's request for leave as moot."

It had already been unclear whether Claim 14 of the patent would make it to trial, given its rejection by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in December following a reexamination.

The vendor had until later this month to file a response to the rejection, but Jacobs' letter to the court on Friday seems to rule out that option.

Oracle filed suit against Google in August 2010, claiming that Android violated a number of patents and copyrights it holds on Java, the open-source programming language. But Google has denied wrongdoing, asserting that Android uses a "clean-room" implementation of Java that doesn't infringe on Oracle's intellectual property.

Oracle and SAP given June court date for TomorrowNow retrial

Oracle was awarded US$1.3 billion in damages from SAP last November as compensation for TomorrowNow's theft of software and support materials from an Oracle website.

SAP argued the sum was unfairly high, and the court agreed, overturning the jury's award. Oracle was given a choice of accepting a lower damages amount of $272 million or going into a new trial, and earlier this month it picked the new trial.

The two weeks starting June 18 are the only two weeks free on the judge's calendar this year, Judge Phyllis Hamilton of the Northern District Court of California said in her scheduling order Thursday. If Oracle and SAP reject that date, they can choose Aug. 13, 2013, or else hope an opening comes up before then.

It will be a busy year for Oracle in the courts. The company is fighting two other big cases that are due to go to trial this year. One was brought by Hewlett-Packard, over Oracle's decision to drop support for Itanium. The other is Oracle's suit against Google for alleged patent and copyright violations in Android.

Cloud Software Consolidation - Is it all good?

How do you look at the recent cloud application software acquisitions. Are you a bit skeptical about what these deals mean to you? Read on as Brian looks at the deals from a customer’s perspective.

Best CCNA Training and CCNA Certification and more Cisco exams log in to Certkingdom.com

Late last week, Oracle announced its intended acquisition of Taleo . Taleo is a fairly significant player in the talent management and human resource software world. I have attended numerous briefings with Taleo management over the years and have seen them acquire a number of complementary technologies during that timeframe (e.g., Vurv).

This acquisition comes on the heels of SAP’s planned acquisition of Success Factors (another cloud HR vendor) and Oracle’s acquisition of RightNow (a cloud CRM vendor).

For the record, I’m not a huge fan of some kinds of software acquisitions. I’m very cautious about deals involving large software companies and older software companies. I also get concerned when a progressive, modern vendor is snapped up by slow moving behemoths that excel in running end-of-life product lines. On the other hand, when small, nimble, highly innovative firms are acquired, it can often bring massive new capabilities to the acquirer.

How you feel about a deal depends on whether you are an investor or a customer. Investors are looking for deal synergies, up-sell or cross-sell opportunities, cost reductions/efficiencies, etc. Customers want to know if the product will be around several more years, whether the product will get enhanced over time and what happens to customer support. Generally, I find that these two sets of goals are often incompatible but usually the investor view is the one that gets a lot of press coverage.

I am taking the customer perspective in analyzing these deals. Aspects of these deals (or prior software acquisitions) leave me less than excited for the customers of the acquired companies. Why is this?

1) Existing customers often get the short end of the stick. Chances are they will be promised new, different, technical architectures that may make some of their prior integration efforts no longer valid. Can you say re-implement?

2) The acquired product may be eliminated altogether. Taleo, for example, migrated the Vurv customer base to the Taleo product line.

3) The acquired products may become frozen in time. The acquiring firm may promise all sorts of continued love, affection and tender loving care for the acquired customers. They may fail to deliver much in that regard, though. Seriously, they know you’re already committed to the product so why should they expend energy and money on you when they could be focused on all-new customers instead?

4) Prices may increase. I’m fairly certain that some of the customers of the acquired companies may see requests for higher fees as part of a condition to accept newer releases of the core product or the underlying tools with which it is built upon. Will the customers receive incremental value for this price increase? I have my doubts. Besides, the acquirer NEEDS this extra money to pay for the acquisition anyway….

5) Vendors will create incredible works of fiction to explain how they will rationalize these products into their product lines. Let’s face it, if the software solution your organization is using is acquired by a firm that already has three, four or five different acquired product lines of similar functionality, don’t you think it’s going to take either the suspension of disbelief or an amazing technical writer to create a story that shows how all of these diverse products from very different creators, across different time lines and technical platforms will somehow come together in some single rational scheme? I think a Pulitzer Prize should go to the author of some of these stories. Personally, I would drop the product as soon as possible and wait for the movie version of these “stories” to come out. My current idea is to get someone in Hollywood to remake “With Eight You Get Eggroll” to be about two software firms with four major, redundant product lines that decide to get married. Hilarity ensues as product line managers all fight for the one developer that could enhance a product. Let’s see who we could get to star in it…..

But what troubles me the most about deals like these is that few people seem to be discussing the real economics of these transactions and why they were driven in the first place.

1) Major, old-line software vendors have come to the awareness that they really do need a cloud software solution. Maybe their older on premise products, contrary to their protestations against this observation, are quite long in the tooth and can no longer be passed off as modern software solutions. In some cases, vendors may be making deals just to appear credible in the cloud software space. Buying credibility and being credible are two different things though. A lot of credibility may have been apparently purchased with these recent deals.

2) Software acquisitions usually often fall into two camps: acquisitions to buy the customer installed base and its attendant revenue stream, or, acquisitions of leading-edge technology to propel or leapfrog innovation efforts within the acquirer’s firm. The former is a clear market share and money grab while the latter is an innovation acceleration ploy. Given the size of some of these recent deals, it appears that these were done for the installed base and the attendant revenue.

3) As in the previous point, an acquisition that delivers little, all new innovative technology to either the acquired or acquiring firm’s customers delivers ‘value’ in the financial sense only. Except in the limited view that more customers can create more revenue that may eventually led to the funding of other research and development efforts, these deals will probably not advance the cloud computing chops of the acquiring firms much and less so for the acquired. I’d need a lot of convincing that the latter isn’t true.

Let’s look at the last bullet point further. Did these recent deals result in the acquisition of powerful platform as a service (PaaS) technology? Did these deals move the acquirers into large, well populated platform ecosystems that have tens of thousands of complementary applications and hundreds of thousands of developers? No. These deals possessed no such platform environment akin to that found in salesforce’s Force.com, NetSuite’s NS-BOS, Apple’s iOS or Google’s Android. No, these look like customer grabs to me.

The real winners in these deals were likely the shareholders of the acquired companies. These transactions created liquidity events for the shareholders and came at an opportune time as these firms would have likely faced significant R&D efforts to introduce new platform and platform extension capabilities to their underlying products.

Taleo, Success Factors and RightNow would likely have continued to have grown their respective markets over time albeit at modest growth rates. Taleo had a good relationship with Workday and was expanding its relationships with other third parties. Success Factors was experiencing good organic and inorganic growth as well. Both Oracle and SAP will likely succeed in cross-selling or up-selling these acquired product lines to their existing and significant customer bases and that should make the deals quickly accretive. But, without a platform on the scale of that which salesforce.com possesses, the value of these deals to the acquired and future customers seems a bit lacking.

Individual deal specifics aside, readers should note that more deals will likely happen in the cloud application software space. Make sure your firm has its plans, strategies, etc. for how it will deal with the market consolidation. If you don’t, you may have to settle with the ’strategy’ an acquirer has for you.

2012 is now underway and many people are wondering what is in store for antivirus 2012. And if you are looking for antivirus gratis this type of PC protection also can offer an impressive array of features for guarding your PC against harmful malware and viruses. In this article, we will take a look at some of the common and not so common features which are included in antivirus programs this year.

Enhanced Rootkit Detection

Many antivirus software and antivirus gratis programs are increasing the protection against rootkits. Rootkits are much harder to detect than the typical virus or malware. A rootkit is capable of bypassing most antivirus and anti-malware programs and then it hides deep inside your PC which means it goes undetected.

Rootkits have become more common and are harder to remove from your PC than a virus or malware. As antivirus programs become more advanced the programmers are resorting to rootkit code in an effort to get by antivirus technology.

For this reason, a popular enhancement for antivirus 2012 and antivirus gratis programs is rootkit detection. This means that the antivirus software is providing tighter security for your PC than in the past to protect your PC against savvy computer programmers that have malicious intent.

Sandbox

A sandbox is a program that is included in your antivirus protection software and has been built into the antivirus gratis programs for this year. The sandbox provides a designated area in your PC where potentially malicious files are stored to prevent them from infecting other files and programs in your computer. The malicious files are those they may have made their way past the antivirus software and into your PC. If the file is potentially harmful to your PC it will remain in the sandbox until it is removed.

Screensaver Which Scans for Malware

When you leave your PC sitting idle for any length of time it is still possible for your computer to be subjected to drive-by downloads and other malicious programs. Some of the antivirus 2012 and antivirus gratis programs offer a screensaver that will automatically scan the drives on your PC for viruses and malware as soon as the screensaver kicks in. This feature ensures your PC is protected even when you are away working on another task.

DNA Matching

The newer antivirus software offers a feature called DNA matching which takes on a proactive approach to identifying viruses and malware. This type of technology which is becoming more common is capable of identifying the code profile of many different types of malicious programs to help detect new viruses and malware created by the same author. Many programmers of malicious software reuse programming codes in new viruses and malware. Antivirus 2012 software and many antivirus gratis programs are capable of identifying the DNA match between previously released malicious files and new ones created by the same author.

These are a few of the features which are included in the quality antivirus programs for this year. Many producers of PC protection software are continually working on ways to beef up the security for PCs which are connected to the Internet.

Oracle buying Taleo for $1.9B in direct hit at SAP

Oracle is buying cloud-based talent management and employee recruitment software vendor Taleo for roughly $1.9 billion, the company announced Thursday. The move comes shortly after SAP's move to acquire SuccessFactors, a close competitor of Taleo, for $3.4 billion in a deal that has yet to close.

"Human capital management has become a strategic initiative for organizations," said Thomas Kurian , executive vice president, Oracle Development, in a statement. "Taleo's industry leading talent management cloud is an important addition to the Oracle Public Cloud."

The Taleo deal is expected to close in the middle of this year and is subject to shareholder approval, Oracle said. Taleo's board has unanimously approved the sale.

Taleo's applications focus on talent management, which includes areas such as recruitment, learning and development, and compensation and succession planning.

It remains to be seen exactly how Taleo's product portfolio will be aligned with Oracle's Fusion HCM (human capital management) software, which is also available as a cloud offering, and has some overlapping functionality.

Together, the companies "expect to create a comprehensive cloud offering for organizations to manage their Human Resource operations and employee careers," Kurian said in a letter to customers. The resulting products will "empower employees and managers to effectively manage careers throughout their entire employment, enable organizations to retain talent and optimize costs, and improve the employee experience through faster on boarding and better collaboration with team members via social media," he added.

Some 5,000 enterprises use Taleo's software, which also handles 15 percent of employee hires in the U.S., according to an Oracle document. About half of the world's top career websites run Taleo as well, Oracle said.

SAP has characterized the pending SuccessFactors purchase as something that will give the company needed "cloud DNA" and expertise in that market.

Oracle's announcement of the Taleo deal included no similar sentiments, but Taleo is its second major acquisition, along with customer-service vendor RightNow, of a cloud application vendor in the past six months.

Since SAP announced the SuccessFactors deal, speculation had run rampant that Oracle would make a move in response, with Taleo bandied about as a possible acquisition target.

Salesforce.com has also begun a push into human-resources software with its recent acquisition of Rypple, which focuses on employee performance management.

Unlike other software categories, the types of products sold by SuccessFactors, Taleo and Rypple have relevance to every employee in a company, allowing for more profitable large-scale SaaS (software as a service) deals.

There will likely be additional acquisitions in the HCM arena soon, said HR software analyst Naomi Bloom, managing partner of the consulting firm Bloom & Wallace. "I think we can expect that the boards of Cornerstone, of Ultimate Software, they are undoubtedly having conversations at least among themselves if not potential acquirers."

Oracle's move doesn't have "much to do with a technology buy," Bloom added. Instead, as with the acquisition of ERP (enterprise resource planning) vendor PeopleSoft, Oracle is looking to take out a competitor and gain a revenue stream, she said.

Taleo also has been running a SaaS business and has a lot of knowledge that will be beneficial to Oracle, Bloom said. While Oracle has long sold an on-demand CRM (customer relationship management) application, that experience isn't as relevant since unlike human resources, CRM isn't subject to government regulations and it impacts far fewer employees in an organization, she said.

Meanwhile, "if you are a Taleo customer, or God forbid are in the process [of becoming one], this should put ice water in your veins," Bloom said. "I have great regard for Oracle, they are an amazing financial machine. But if I'm a customer, I might look at it differently."

Oracle's announcement stated that it is currently reviewing Taleo's product road map, and that "any resulting features and timing of release of such features" are at Oracle's "sole discretion."

But Oracle has invested heavily in its Fusion Middleware and Fusion Applications as a next-generation software platform. Therefore, Taleo customers could expect some incremental improvements in the software over time, Bloom said. However, "if I entered into business with Taleo because I felt they were going to be a continuous innovation machine, that's not going to happen," she added.

The SuccessFactors and Taleo deals also could reflect growing concern on the part of both SAP and Oracle over the rise of Workday, which has landed large deals for its own cloud-based HCM software, Bloom said.

"I think Oracle was drawn in to having to do this deal," said Forrester Research analyst Paul Hamerman.

"I don't know why they didn't make this deal five years ago," he added. Oracle would have paid much less and would have primarily gained recruitment software, Hamerman said. But today, Taleo has built out the "four pillars" of talent management, namely recruitment, employee job performance, compensation and learning, he said.

While Oracle has had great success selling core HR applications for payroll, benefits and other areas, it hasn't had much luck with talent management, Hamerman said.

The overlap with Fusion HCM is not that significant, since it currently lacks recruitment, learning and succession planning capabilities, all areas where Taleo is strong, according to Hamerman. "It's actually a pretty complementary fit."

Making lame excuses for Microsoft's decision to drop the Start button in Windows 8

Is there method ot Microsoft’s madness, or is the decision pure madness?

Over the past few days I’ve seem a number of Microsoft pundits come up with lame excuses to try to justify Microsoft’s decision to drop the on-screen Start button in Windows 8. Is there method ot Microsoft’s madness, or is the decision pure madness?

Here’s Paul Thurrott’s justification:

While it’s technically true that the Start button/Orb, which used to adorn the left end of the taskbar on the Windows desktop, is missing in action, most people are missing out on two salient points. First, the Windows desktop is not the primary user interface in Windows 8 anymore. That’s the Start screen.

Second, the Start button isn’t gone, and it’s not going away at all. In fact, it will be present on every single Windows 8 device sold going forward.

He goes on to post a picture of a physical Windows button on a tablet, and points out that a physical Windows Key is required for any PC or device to get the Certified for Windows 8 logo from Microsoft.

Well, I’ve got two counterpoints to Thurrott’s argument. First, and I’m surprised he didn’t mention this, it’s just the visual ‘orb’ hat’s being removed from the left-hand-side of the taskbar. There will still be an invisible hotspot in that part of the screen that does what the button currently does. Microsoft is kinda assuming that everyone will still go there looking for the Start button and will continue to offer the functionality, albeit without the UI.

Secondly, and I think that this is an important point - is a physical button a step forward or a step back compared to an on-screen button?

Before we answer that, let’s consider Apple’s iPhone and iPad. Neither of these devices have any sort of on-screen Home/Start button. Did Microsoft ‘copy’ Apple here? maybe, but that doesn’t matter. The difference is that the iOS platform has never had an on-screen Start/Home button. Windows, on the other hand, has had this feature since Windows 95, and people have come to expect it, so I expect that it’s removal (even if just the symbolic gesture of removing the UI element) will raise (and possibly knit) a few eyebrows.

Personally, I think that removing an on-screen UI element and replacing it with a physical button (a physical button that most systems already have) seems like a step backwards to me because it penalizes people who prefer using a mouse than a keyboard. I’m happy with the Windows key on keyboards, but the idea of having to rely on a physical button on a device that OEMs can put wherever they want puts me off because I know that OEMs can do boneheaded things. If Microsoft was bold enough to remove the functionality as well as the UI element, that would be one thing, but adopting some sort of halfway gesture seems like sitting on the fence to me, and all the lame excuses are just making that decision seem even lamer.

Either keep the Start button in or remove it completely.

Do you think Microsoft was right to follow in Apple’s footsteps and remove the on-screen Start button, or do you think that it’s one UI change too far?

The Value of Higher Education

Have you ever thought about why saving for their children’s college education is such an important part of every parent’s financial plans? Why do so many of them take heavy loans just to put their kids through college?

It’s understandable that parents do it because they have the best interests of their children at heart. They want to see their children succeed in life, and consider a college education fundamental to that success.

But why does our government give out so much money every year in financial aid for college students? How do they possibly benefit from spending billions of dollars in grants, scholarships, and loans, for something that seems to contribute just to an individual’s personal development?

It’s because the value of higher education goes far beyond personal benefits. In addition to contributing to a person’s individual development, higher education also helps in nation building.

According to a study conducted by College Board in 2004 on trends in higher education, college has both individual and societal benefits. Unfortunately, not enough effort has been made to spread awareness about the value of higher education to the society at large.

Benefits of Higher Education: Individual and Societal

The debate about the value of higher education is probably as old as college itself. We have all had animated living-room and classroom discussions about the benefits of higher education to us as individuals. So, in addition to the personal benefits that college has for individuals, it’s important to also focus on the societal benefits of higher education.

For an individual, college education has the potential to impact her personal, professional, financial, and social well-being. Study after study has been conducted to demonstrate that higher education can lead to higher earnings.

The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), in its 2010 survey, established that professionals with some sort of college education have higher weekly earnings as compared to those who have no post-secondary education. In fact, the higher an individual’s level of education, the higher his income. Naturally, professional or graduate degree programshave higher earning potential as compared to bachelor’s or associate’s programs.

In terms of employment opportunities, college graduates also generally fare much better than their high school counterparts. The DOL survey showed an inverse relationship between higher education and unemployment rates. The rate of unemployment among high school graduates was 10.3 percent in 2010, as compared to just 5.4 percent among those who held a bachelor’s degree, and 4 percent among those who had completed graduate degree programs.1

Not just the number of employment opportunities, but even the nature of jobs available to individuals improves with college education. A number of white-collar jobs, even entry-level ones, are available to college graduates only. Those with no post-secondary education, on the other hand, may get stuck in an endless cycle of minimum wage and low-skill jobs.

On a personal level, college education can build self-confidence and enhance an individual’s position in her community. Plus, some of the bonds formed in college can last a lifetime and can contribute to a person’s overall happiness quotient.

As for the societal benefits of higher education, some of the facts revealed by the College Board study may actually come as a surprise.

• Because college education can lead to lower levels of unemployment and poverty, it can result in higher tax revenues and lower dependence on social benefits.
• Those who go to college are believed to be better members of society, which is demonstrated by their contributions to their community through volunteer work, blood donation, voting in elections, etc.
• College graduates are also less likely to be perpetrators of crime and have lower incarceration rates as compared to those who have never been to college.
• And finally, believe it or not, college education leads to lower smoking rates. That may be because college grads have a higher sense of personal health and well-being.

Nestled in a rugged case from integrator Hubworks, the 9.7-in. iPad is being tested for customers to make food and drink orders from their tables. They can also use the tablets to jump online to check out Facebook, Twitter and play interactive games.

The 830-store Buffalo Wild Wings chain is about to launch a second phase of the iPad pilot program at a Minneapolis location after working out technical kinks at a suburban Toronto site, said Tim Murphy, director of international business for the chain.

"Ultimately, we are trying to use the technology to enhance the customer experience," he said in an interview. "People are familiar with iPads, iPhones and Android tablets, so this would enhance that."

The chain hasn't decided whether to combine purchasing from the device with purely entertainment uses, something it hopes to measure in its tests, Murphy said.

If the chain decides the device can be used for entertainment, it might sell advertising on the tablets, license popular games or even design custom-built games suited to its audience and brand, he said.

Buffalo Wild Wings doesn't expect the devices to replace waiters. Instead, if customers make their own orders, waiters will be freed up to interact more with their guests and promote food and drinks or the in-bar live trivia games, Murphy said.

Other companies make table-top ordering devices used by some other restaurant chains, but most are smaller devices and some are fixed to a spot on the table, Murphy noted. He said he evaluated products by Ziosk, which provides a table-top surface touchscreen, and E la Carte, which uses a Presto tablet with a 7-in. screen.

Hubworks has included a charging capability and credit card reader in the rugged case, and has enhanced battery efficiency so that a single unit can last up 12 to 15 hours before being placed in a charging dock, Murphy said. Hubworks minimized the power drain with a screensaver and other features.

The Hubworks case doesn't cover the glass screen of the iPads, and waiters must wipe them down after every use to remove fingerprints. "We've not added a protective layer over the screen, but we're evaluating if we need one," Murphy said.

Hubworks sells each 8GB iPad with the case, a magnetic credit card reader slot and extended charging capability for $750; it also offers integration with point-of-sale systems selling its software as a service and charging licensing fees, said Aaron Gabriel, vice president of sales and marketing and co-founder of Hubworks Interactive. Units can be mounted to tables, but Buffalo Wild Wings has included an RFID security system to keep the devices from being stolen, he said.

Murphy said that there were complications integrating the iPad with its existing point-of-sales system, so the chain may simply have customers order their wings and drinks through a Web-based ordering system already in place. That system is used by customers who order food for pick-up.

Depending on how the trials go, Hubworks believes restaurants could offer more functions, including video chat using the newer iPad 2 at each table.

Why the iPad?P Partly because the device is well-known and larger than others on the market, Murphy said. Plus, many customers come to the sports bars in groups and stay for several hours at a time.

In the first test, while men in a group typically watched a football or hockey game, women in the group would pick up the iPad and launch Facebook, Murphy said. "We have a very captive audience with good sales volume in our restaurants, so we view this iPad as a way for customers to stay connected socially and not have to use their own device."

If the device cuts costs through advertising or offers greater restaurant efficiencies, so much the better. Those factors will be among those Buffalo Wild Wings evaluates.

"We have a lot to work out," Murphy added. "Nobody knows where this is heading."

The Basic Methodology of Software Development Services

Software development is a technically complex process which goes through various stages during the whole development procedure. The concept is termed as software development life cycle (SDLC) and involves various stages of software development. To successfully offer software development services, organizations should define a development methodology that suits the requirements of the project. Different projects may require different methodologies therefore software development service providers must evaluate the project requirements first and then formulate the strategy for the software development life cycle.

Most of the software development service providers have a pre-defined methodology that is implemented while developing a software. The process gets a little modified according to the project requirements but the essence of the project development procedure remains the same. The basic stages of software development are as mentioned below:

Requirements Specifications: The first and foremost step while developing software must be gathering the requirements of the project. The organizations must start with analyzing the feasibility and the requirements of the project. Some questions that must be clarified in this phase are:

What are client’s expectations of the project?

What would the user want in the software?

Is the project technically feasible or not?

The above questions, along with many more, must be answered and properly justified before software development service providers move any further.

Design: This stage involves development of an outlay for developing the project with all the little details included. The project requirements are evaluated and an implementation strategy for achieving these requirements in the form of a software is formulated. The designing phase is divided into two categories i.e. system design and component design. The system design is design of the software as a whole where questions like how the individual components will interact with each other are answered. The component design phase, as the name suggests, deals with the planning for each individual component.

Implementation: The components are actually created in the implementation phase. The design layout created in the previous phase is implemented and converted into a machine language that the computer can understand and respond to. Programming languages such as C, C++, C#, Asp.Net, PHP etc are used according to the project requirement to achieve the best possible results. The source code and database are created in the implementation phase. Accurate and effective designing of the software is essential for a successful implementation of the software.

Testing: The testing phase usually starts after the components are created but in some cases the software development service provider can start the testing along with the implementation phase. This methodology may require a little more effort and time but the end solution is void of any discrepancies or errors as they are detected and removed as soon as a component is developed.

Installation: The components of the software are combined together and the completed software is installed and executed on a computer system. If all the previous phases have been performed expertly then there will be no problem in the installation phase. A thorough testing is again recommended after installing the software to make sure that the end solution is working as desired.

Maintenance: It has been noticed that almost every software goes through changes and modification after it is completed. This may be due to some new requirements, overlooked features or the change in the business strategy. This requires constant evaluation and maintenance of the software.

Most of the software development service providers follow the above described development methodology for creating softwares. It is the basic methodology of software development services. Once the software is completed and delivered successfully, the task of the service provider does not end. A professional software development company will offer maintenance services to insure a smooth and well functioning solution to their clients.
